I agree the issue needs to be addressed ASAP. Most work jobs that many natural Americans would not work anyway. I'd rather have them on the tax roles giving back to this country. All of us except the Native Americans came here from somewhere else anyway and what would have happened to our families if they were told to turn around and go back?

President Obama has a tremendous amount on his plate, but immigration reform and a tough stand on illegals is extremely important. Granted, many have been here for years and should be allowed to apply for citizenship. After all, we are a country of immigrants. The borders need to be ultra tight, however.

The problems of terrorism and drugs needs to be raised to the level of 'Emergency' status. Homeland security need to make this a priority and no more delays or foot dragging. There is no political correctness about this.

We can't employ our own people because of outsourcing and illegal immigration now. It's time to reverse the Republican's 'no touch' plans and their support of corporate greed. Bring back the jobs and get rid of the illegal immigrants who have helped screw up our economy.

All of us others, whose families started as immigrants, were the results of the U.S. asking for immigrants to help build this country. No one is asking the Mexican illegals to come in and they certainly are not knocking at the front door with papers in hand.

The issue was addressed in the 1980's, amnesty was given, laws were written but not enforced. Amnesty cannot and should not be addressed unless we find a way to plug the holes along the border and get serious about protecting our country and our sovereignty.

If we allow people to live here legally, we will be inclined to worry less about the social security fund, taxes etc. Illegals are working here anyways, might as well bring them into what we all experience every day... taxes.

Employers need to be fined heavily for hiring illegals, as well as they should not pay cash to any of their employees.

I absolutely think that this issue should be addressed, but I think that his proposals are just ridiculous. The thing is, I don't care how long people have been here illegally. They BROKE THE LAW getting here. I feel that not only should illegals be sent back, but they should have a stiff prison sentance imposed on them before they are returned to their country. I also think that any business owner that would hire illegals to save a buck should face prison sentances. Fines to large companies don't work. It would be like fining a huge company like 3M for illegally disposing of waste from production. In the long run it is cheaper for them to dump illegally, and when caught, spend the puny couple of million and go on doing like they were. I think that if you put Mr. suit and tie in the general population at a correctional facility for a while, (manditory time served, no bail) maybe he would think twice about hiring illegals.

I am all for immigration when the legal channels are followed. I don't like the idea of people entering the country illegally, having a bunch of kids that they aren't able to properly support on their own, and then letting the government dig their dirty little fingers in to the Social Security fund that I have payed in to all of my life to pay for them. I am 31 years old and the government has already seen fit to dig in to that fund to pay for all variety of people who are unwilling to step up and support themselves. I will probably have to work up until I am dead because I won't be able to afford to retire, and there won't be a penny left for my family, who will have lived and worked here legally all of their lives when I am gone.

Although I don't think it is necessary you could even have them forfeit 7 years of social secuity for the priveledge. They may not can vote but they work enough to pay a litttle ss/medicare/fwh and can file taxes on whatever SSN they can use and then get a HUGE amount back from all the credits for which they qualify, based on income and number of dependants, not to mention the free health care and/or welfare benefits they get. I think you are mistaken jlewis21. Most of the inmigrants get deductions from their paychecks and never get anything back because they are afraid to be found by the irs. So there is no tax return problem there.

jme2009: I think you are not understanding. The deductions that are taken out are so little because the illegals set their deductions at the maximum (12) on their W2 forms. When someone does this, they must pay the back taxes at the end of the year - which the illegals do not do. So yes they do get deductions taken out in payroll, but nothing to the amount you and I are. Then in the end, you and I pay the back taxes, while the illegals send that "back taxes" money to their homeland. Most of the illegals do not get a refund because you have to pay more into the system than the system called for in order to get a refund. Kind of hard to do this when your deductions are set at 12 and payroll only takes out a few dollars. I know this because I have worked admin for a company that, to this day, hires illegals.

The second aspect I do not think you have considered is the use of fake identification. This is the real issue. I know that some illegals have two ID's, one to work on, and the other to collect welfare on. On top of this, the taxes that are being taken out at payroll are not connected to the illegal, but to some poor sap somewhere in Amereica, he/she just got a bunch of back taxes due!!!!

Yeah, the instant that you are penalized for every single thing you've done wrong during your whole life is the instant you can natter on about someone doing something (harmless but) illegal. There is a TREMENDOUS lack of understanding of the situation going on by the people in this thread - there is no acceptable back and white solution that won't cause grave harm to the US economy. Most illegal aliens are working, often in jobs that Americans cannot or will not perform. Are you interested in $10 a quart for strawberries? Five doillar iceberg lettuce? If these jobs were suddenly vacated (a flat-out impossible feat of deportation, to be honest), whole sections of the agricultural sector would collapse. Food prices would skyrocket. And there are many other sectors of the economy that would struggle. No, the solution is to get everyone on the books, paying taxes, and *then* lock things down as best as possible. A lot of people work for about 8 dollars an hour or 64.00 a day. do you think that everyone who is legal makes bunches of money? even with a college education and 50,000 dollars in school loans that my son is repaying the only job he could get right now is paying him 9 dollars an hour! or 72.00 a day! He works very hard as do many of my family. we are not of a "minority group" I have picked strawberries and oranges and grapes when I was a teenager living in the central valley of California. It absolutely amazes me how many of you people think the Illegals are paying taxes! Have you ever heard of working under the table? In case you havent it means the employer and employee are not paying any taxes on the wages. I am an Electrician and see this every day! (I also report every single Illegal anytime I find out they are!)

The point of this is not only are the Illegals not paying their taxes, but also the employer! This adds up to a lot of taxes that should be paid, but aren't! Maybe if the employers didn't have vast amounts of illegals willing to do this our taxes might be lower!

I used to do taxes, Proud White American. While some are working under the table, you have to understand that an employer cannot afford to pay everyone under the table because they need the expense of the labor to keep from paying taxes on their own return. It is also very easy to get a stolen SSN and file taxes "legally" for all intents and purposes. Another little trick is to file an extension because the IRS has chosen all the returns to audit by the time the extended return is due. Also, the IRS has certain redc flags that they look for to audit and a return of this type would probably not be one of them.

That's a crock of crap Rita. The jobs most illegals have are not jobs Americans would take. There is plenty of work out there - people just refuse to train up, or refuse to work for less (the latter which I understand completely). The current illegals serve a critical function in the American economy, and not only would it be impossible to 'send them home and secure the borders' without a crushingly expensive effort, it wouldn't last long. It's pretty much pointless, and would cause serious economic trouble at a time that is very, very inadvisable. Get people on the books, make them redistribute to all areas of the country to reduce the impact on the southwest, and THEN work hard at securing the borders better (or make a policy of instant deportation). We don't need less Americans - just all Americans paying taxes for their benefits.

I personnaly know of an illegal that has his own landscaping business where I live in Colorado. He told me in 2006, when Bush was pushing his immigation reform, that if the reform passed, he would pack up his successful business he has been doing for 10+ years and head back home. The agricultural and fast food industries are overrun by illegals and taking the student jobs away, These are the industries that got many of our so called rich and wealthy started in the work force. I know I personally worked at McDonalds when I was in High School, but kids today cannot do this due to all the illegals taking these jobs. Jobs for high school kids are very important in the growing stages and to form work ethics. Axel - uh, the first recession under Bush had actually started under Clinton's watch. Recessions are not necessarily bad. In fact they are kind of like wildfires. A natural cleaning out process of the dead wood. Bush's tax cuts and other policies helped to effectively pull the economy out of the first recession and the economy was rolling along quite well until Nazi Pelosi and Dingy Reid took over Congress.

I actually had a good job making about 40K/year when I joined at 30 yrs of age. I took a PAY CUT because I love my country, and though I only partially agreed with the war, I also thought we wasted time on Saddam and not going after Bin Laden, I wanted to serve because I felt it was my duty as an American. Here's a thought... "Read the Constitution!" I've been doing a very informal pole of friends, family and coworkers. About 50/50 Dem/Rep. Most Rep could actually tell me something about the constitution. The exact opposite was true of Dems. Both parties of politicians are stomping all over the constitution Obama is just doing at a staggering pace, but I will agree that Bush/Cheney didn't do it much justice either. I am a conservative person who has accepted liberal social views because when I read the bible I understood by Luke 6:37 that it is not my job to judge others. I am making $8 extra dollars a week thanks to Barry. Michelle thinks $8 a week is better than $400 all at once! Thanks! Barry goes to Eupope and sells us out, wants to disarm while Iran and North Korea are ARMING UP!

Americans workers are plumbers which means cleaning out sh!t. They do those jobs because they pay. The jobs illegals are taking are driving the wages down. American will do that jobs, it has been proven. When they raided a chicken plant and sent the illegals home, they had to increase the wages by 75 cents and hour, above what walmart was paying and workers filled the place us that are citizens. In GA the builders hired illegals, homes prices continued to go up even with cheap wages to make the builders richer, but the wages for drywallers, bricklayers, carpenters went down...do we really want our people to live 3-5 familes to a home so they can afford to work for the same wages as illegals do? This is truely crazy, many will not see the mess we are headed for until their job is export or filled by an HB "immigrant" ... fix our own country and let Mexico take care of hers. She has money and refuses to build her own nation but would prefer to send us her poor. We have immigration laws, let them use those to obtain citizenship. The illegals coming here are not interested in anything but our money, us paying for their children to attend our schools and use our healthcare, and then go home to retire. Why are they not building Mexico? They have a breath taking shore line, natural resources, the ability to grow like California or Arizona does, but instead they run over here...

I have worked some really tough jobs, farming included. When you need money, you get the job. Problem is, you can now make more money off the government not working than working hard. Only reason I worked those jobs was pride, if I had none I would have just taken the government check.

No kidding, I worked a full time job as a farm hand in Iowa WHILE I went to college in the 70's. I got $100 a week and I'm not talking 40 hour weeks either. More like 50 to 60. Attended classes during the day, worked late afternoon and evening and studied at night.

Ron you obviously just spit out what you read from the same tired newspaper or internet sites and don't actually research anything on your own. The Obama Government estimated that one in seven contruction jobs created by the bailouts would actually go to illegals, why? because there are so many in the construction trade and they won't make the use of e-verify a law. Most workers that work picking strawberries or other produce get a work visa and are allowed to come here on a temporary basis to work the fields. However many have decided that they would rather do other lines of work and have left the fields for greener pastures.

I guarantee if you open these jobs to legal citizens, those jobs will be grabbed up at every turn. The only difference is that a legal citizen isn't going to work for nothing.

Employers need to be held criminally liable for hiring illegals. Stiffer penalties and jail time would be a good start. Mandatory use of e-verify should be the law. If they are using a ssn# where did they get it? Besides breaking the law by coming here illegally they are breaking another law of identity theft.

The first step in immigration reform has to be securing our borders, next is all employers must use e-verify to check the legal status of all employees. If they aren't legal no more job.

The one thing I find really funny about all the people that say that all the illegals should be allowed to stay, blanket immunity all that good hogwash is what about all the illegals that are felons do we let them stay? Also before 9/11 our government did not follow the immigration laws that were already on the books. This let at least two terrorists to come in illegally at will and several of the others to stay in the country even though their school visas had expired. So before you start screaming for reform consider the possibility that more Atta's maybe in the country right now and you are willing to give them the right to work freely vs secretly to cause another terrorist incident.

There must be a reason why you couldn't renew your visa. And you use the term 'citizen' too loosely. Ten years is a very long time to be in a country that you are NOT a naturalized citizen of. If you don't want to become a US Citizen, then it is time for you to go back to your own country.

I agree with you that you should be able to stay and you should be one of the illegalls to be moved to the front of the line. But if you choose that you do not want to become a citizen than maybe you should concider returning to your Country of birth.

If you want to live here, apply for citizenship. Do not expect to stay here indefinitely on a visa! If you do not want to apply for citizenship and be here legally, then leave. If you are here on an expired visa, you are an illegal, not a good citizen, and are taking a job from an actual citizen of this country.
