, the reason Obama has to make health care public is to save money. US citizens pay a total of $7500/year in health care costs, while France, who has the best system in the world, pays only $3000. By shifting health care costs to government and eliminating private profits (especially in insurance) Obama will effectively cut costs for all Americans. Government will pay more, but private individuals and businesses will pay less. The money people save on health care will go toward other purchases that stimulate the economy. Private health insurance is basically nothing more than a paperwork nightmare that creates a tax on the society. Check out health care systems around the world (Japan, Canada, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Britain) and you'll see that every sane country has a mostly public system because health care cannot be a "free market" good since people need it to live - there is no incentive for health care providers to cut costs. It's not like a flat-screen TV for which you can wait to come down in price. Try to name one year where health care prices went down - is that an efficient market?

First of all... they are not the reason for rising healthcare costs. Reimbursement for healthcare services have been going down since 1992 when Medicare introduced their new physician payment program. In order to survive in the healthcare industry today, physicians have to be sign contracts with Insurance Companies to accept what they are willing to pay. Physician do not get a cost of living increase every year like most American workers. Since reimbursements go down every year, their incentive is to CUT THEIR COSTS in order to make as much as they did the year before. The problem is with the FOR PROFIT insurance carriers who INCREASE PREMIUMS to their insured every year, and LOWER PAYMENTS to physicians every year. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to look at the data. In addition, the government is basically forcing physicians into Electronic Medical Records (increasing costs for expensive systems) and if not, will penalize them by lowering payments even more. Why do you think we are seeing a shortage of primary care physicians.... it's not economical to become a doctor any more... you know where we get Residents these days.... Pakistan, India, Jordan, etc. Yep... you're future doctors will be foreigners.

There are so many things that raise red flags about her various excuses.
1. She was a member of the committee that discussed such matters, if she wasn't there for some of the meetings as she claims, why not? Wasn't national security kind of an important issue in the wake of 911?
2. OR, she was at the meetings, knew full well what was going on, but was too mousy to say anything about it.
3. Or she was at the meetings, knew full well what was going on , agreed with the methods, and is now flat out lying about her knowledge and participation, made all the worse since she is leading the charge to punish those who determine the enhanced interrogation methods were legal. This is so fundamentally dishonest and disgraceful that if she were my elected representative, I would be doing whatever I could to get her recalled now.

The only changes are going to be massive inflation and huge taxes on everything essential (like utilities, food and anything else we need to survive.) As for the government run health care I am a retired person that has been told that I will just have to suck it up and accept the fact I have to die so no health treatments for me. I just paid into medicare and SSN but since government has stolen all the funds I have to again suck it up and let them take it away from me. Hint--- good business to start would be tour to Alaska for retired folks in winter to go sit on the ice. OPPPPPs maybe Gore will object since we might add to the ice melting.......

If keeping prisoners around without clothes and ridiculing them, attacking them with dogs, waterboarding, and beating them were effective then it should be FAR more effective to simply gang rape them, and then start cutting off appendages. We cannot believe anything NANCY PELOSI ever says. She is a liar and incompetent. She has no ethics, no priorities and no clout with anyone with a brain. The fact that she is 3rd in line and the speaker of the house only goes to prove how pathetic American voters and politicians have become. The tactics developed and used in the war on terror relate directly to the fact that the war we are engaged in is not with another country but with international criminals & religious zealots who breed hate and scapegoating while promising sexual favors to those who martyr themselves. They are truly brainwashed and indoctinated into a lifestyle to divert their attention from the fact that their governments hordes their money and keeps the population in poverty.

What if the children of your employer or your neighbor was kidnapped and they thought you or your child or someone else you cared about were involved or had information that justified waterboarding or worse?
The DOD has admitted publicly that the vast majority of the people they have detained have comitted no crime. It was OK to abuse them just in case they knew something. It was reasonable to assume they must know something since they were found in the a neighborhood where bad things had happened, so they must be resisting interrogation.
Perfect logic. They must know something. If they don't tell us what we want to hear we must torture them. If they die from our efforts to squeeze non-existent information out of them it is acceptable collateral damage. If we make our enemies stronger, "bring 'em on".

Torture is illegal. Pelosi didnt order torture of detainees. Pelosi did not have legal memos written to make torture sound legal. Pelosi did not pressure CIA to find intell to justify war, or use torture to such an extent. When you torture one prisoner 98 times or over 200 times it is because they are not saying what you want to hear. Torture in the past has been used to get FALSE confessions. Torture has been shown to get false information. If you have no information to give you are likely to lie to get torture stopped,
Is it not the job of the CIA to generally lie, manipulate & deceive for their country & president? I think it is basically their job. The only question here is how far did they go & with whom? Shortly after 9/11, America was in panic and at war with unknowns - it is clear the President executed aggressive powers in many ways. The GOP at that time had little trust of liberals & Nancy Pelosi was liberal in chief, at least in rhetoric to Rush Limbaugh & Dick Cheney? Yes, to me IT IS conceivable that she was kept in the dark for some time, the CIA being good soldiers and doing what they were told. But I also think both sides are only telling half truths to score political points. The GOP has been scrambling to avoid blame for their checkered past and change the subject right now. Nancy Pelosi is just the GOP "whipping boy" .

They probably don't give a crap about our moral high ground, but that is what separates us from them. That is what gives us the authority to condemn evil--the fact that we would never stoop that low and are in a position to actively fight evil, certain that it is wrong. If we torture Iraqis and kill Iraqis and destroy the Iraqi culture then what makes us better than Saddam, who used weapons that we gave him to kill some separatists, in order to maintain control of his nation? Terrorists don't give a crap about our moral high ground, true. They are terrorists. But WE should give a crap about our moral high ground or we are no better than them. Is that really what you want history to say about you? That you were no better than a terrorist, because you didn't give a crap about the moral high ground this nation was founded upon?
NO terrorists DO NOT care about their moral high ground. They do however care if you strip their friends down, abuse them, torture them, beat them to death, waterboard them EVEN the ones that aren't terrorists. Yeah you know if you did that to me I would care too. How far would you go if someone rounded up your friends and did an Abu Ghraib on them or if someone raped your girlfriend and killed her entire family? We created terrorists with torture and the general mood at the time. I would fight too if you did that in my home.
Why do we think we have to be "better" than anybody else. Come off it... the terrorists in Al Qaida are sure they are "better" than us.... it's just words. Moral highground is just words. Actions that keep our children and our country safe should not be determined on someone's subjective idea of what is moral -- it should be based on facts. Facts show that interrogation techniques saved lives; noone's moral high ground has ever saved someone's life; it just creates martyrs.
So what you are advocating is not drawing any lines. SO it would be OK then to execute a child if it would get results right? You said NO subjectivity right? How about we flay someones parents in front of them. Keep in mind moral highground is JUST A WORD! SO that would mean that ANYTHING is ok with you right?

There is no evidence that torture saved any lives. There is abundant evidence that those responsible have claimed information gathered through other means was in fact obtained through torture.
Where are the facts you reference that prove that these interrogation techniques saved lives or even produced actionable intelligence?
These techniques do not make us more secure. Military and intelligence analysts have stated this opinion repeatedly and publicly. Strengthening our enemies does not make us stronger, it makes us weaker. Abusing detainees, including those thought to be guilty of no crime, based on the dubious assumption that they MUST know something or the possibility that they may know something does not save lives, make us stronger or more secure. It may empower those who seek to escalate this conflict and initiate the next conflict, if that includes you, please speak for yourself and leave the rest of us out of it.

No, actually it wasn't. Those documents were going to be revealed anyway and contained no information that the public hadn't already heard. The only people who support torture for any reason (which is always illegal) was because they are stauch GOP supporters. The truth, as you can ask ANY interrogator, is that torture doesn't generally provide useful information, is all but USELESS in a ticking time bomb scenario, and puts Americans and especially soldiers at greater risk than they are already in.
Incidentally, I'm not a lib, I'm a realist and I am fully aware that the whole conservative/liberal dicotomy that is presented as truth is merely a ploy to keep Americans divided and so busy arguing with each other that we don't have time to deal with the criminals in power. You can debate all you like cryingprophet, but hundreds, if not thousands of new terrorists were created before 9/11 while we sat back and did nothing! How do you think the 20 came into being who were supposed to be and were on the airplanes that day? They just weren't picked off the streets. They were the 'cream of their crop' to get that assignment.
Everyone just sat back because all the terrorist activity was overseas and no problem to our way of life. It is easy to not worry about that after all it was only 'soldiers' getting killed and they knew what they had signed up for afterall.
President Bush took the fight to the terrorists in their backyards and hurt their brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles, not mine anymore. Can you tell me the increase in the number of terrorists created before and after 9/11? I haven't seen that published anywhere, because I don't believe that it is significantly higher.

Perhaps a little research is in order. One of Al Qaeda's primary goals was to have us occupy a muslim nation for the purpose of strengthening their organization.
A quick google of "iraq war + al qaeda recruit" will supply you with ample, expert opinion on the effect of our tactics on Al Qaeda recruiting efforts and funding.

Think if we had started rounding up members of the Nazi party after WWII and started sending them into gas chambers...how heroic would that have been? Or if we had gone into Japan and tortured Japanese military, would they be our ally today?
The fact that we are using the tactics we have always fought to protect others from is a sad statement on the diseased nature of our leadership and may also be a sign of the diseased nature of our nation as a whole. No nation can survive if we are isolated because of poor decision making, and no amount of military might is sufficient to single handedly conquer the entire world. We NEED allies, but who wants to be friends with a bully and a monster?
Instead of helping to build peace, we are creating enemies and our children and our childrens' children will have to pay for the evil we have wrought.

You are correct to say that the players are corrupt. You would be even more correct if you said that the system they participate in is corrupt. What do you suppose would happen if we elected an honest politician? They would either be completely powerless, be forced to "join the team" to work on the team's problems or be seduced by the power that comes from being owned by powerful organizations or individuals.
