serena seems poutier when the game isn't going her way. she resorts to gamesmanship and delay tactics. venus looks like the tall girl nobody would dance with. i can relate to that because i'm a short order cook.
I was always a Serena fan, but when I met them in person at the J.P. Morgan Chase tennis tournament in Carson, CA. Venus was soooo much nicer. Their father, Richard, told me to meet him where the press enters at 5:00 and I arrived around 4:30. Venus was coming from the practice courts b/c she played the night match. My face light up when I saw her and I could even speak. She was so polite and gracious when I told her how much I loved her and her sister. Then, about 15 mins. later Serena rolled around. I asked if I could take a picture and she was like go ahead. She wasn't completely rude, but nothing like Venus. After that day, Venus has evolved as my favorite Williams.
They are both racists with an entitlement attitude and more than a little megalomania
Steve o r u really a racist yourself. Either you hate the game or players that play it. Move on Stevo.
To King of the jungle jive ass:
Let me give you some history lesson on the term racist - to be a racist, you must be an institution, such as bank or school that has historically discriminated against an ethic group of people or gender. Or, by law - institutionalizing discrimination by prosecution (made up law against people of color or gender) or lack of prosecution by law commited by perps against the offending group. For example, Jim Crow was legalized by the government to subvert the freedom of Blacks, who endured enslavement over 244 years.
Thus, Serena nor Venus can be a racist. However, anyone can be prejudiced against anyone or anything. Get your @!$%# straight before remarking on terms you incorrectly use - dumb ass! Now you've been educated and informed on the correct usage of a word. This goes for anyone who uses incorrect vernacular without its historical context.
They are both talented and accomplished athletes and people. I just like Venus better. I can't explain it, but if it is an all Williams final I will be rooting for Venus
TonyDaBoss you're so right! People throw around the term "racist" w/ out knowing what it means, and I've found that some caucasion people like to go around calling minorities racists just so that they can feel better about themselves. I love both of the Williams sisters, but I am a little partial to Serena b/c she's the younger sister.
ivyleague-846428 you can't spell. You and Tony need to get over yourselves.
Serena is classless. Everytime she loses she chalks it up to something SHE did and never gives credit to her opponent. This makes the US look horrible in the international eyes of professional tennis and professional sports in general. Venus is a class act that quietly wins tournaments without instigating drama or crying on court. Plus, she always gives credit to her opponents. I hope Serena pulls out with another "injury" aka being too fat.
I became a "fan" of the WTA when BJ King, Evert, Graf, Sabatini etc. "graced" the courts
The Williams Sisters have done as much to bring down the image of women's tennis as those before did to bring it up
Winning isn't everything
Part of my disgust of the Williams is their attitude they can't lose, when they are beaten they always state (Serena is especially guilty of this) "they lost the match" not that the other player simply was better or outplayed them that day. Venus saying she is unbeatable and can only lose if "SHE" decides to is arrogant and self centered.
I still recall the incident several years ago when Venus purposely smashed into 120# Martina Hingis with her own #180 knocking her half way across the court at changeover. Hingis had the grace and style to say nothing
The Williams are very good at tennis, at sportsmanship they plainly stink and tennis suffers overall
I really think a Lisicki, Dementieva or Safina in the final would draw a better viewership
Steffi Graf where are you, the Tennis world needs a heroine and it IS NOT a Williams
BTW, don't bother with the race card as my Wife is AA.
Sean maine and those of your ilk, you are sadly miss-informed about the Williams Sisters and their family, but then what is new?
Perhaps you should do some research and not be so dependent on some of these commentators/sports talking heads, - some who are biased against them for their own reasons- for your opinions or how you should react to these unpretentious, forthright, hardworking American females/athletes who helped to resusitate tennis, take it off life support and eventually move it out of sports ICU and into the general population imo.
The Williamses helped to move the sport away from the old country club style past time thing to the sports main stream and players being seen as athletes i.e. professional tennis athletes not just tennis 'players' with their athletisism, speed, stamina, conditioning, etc imo.
Like noted before, do your research and come to your own opinion not supplied by small minded, mean spirited anti Williams sports regurors who have their own agendas for their often negative spiel.
The fact that your wife is AA is neither here nor there. There are AAs who are equally pretentious, prejudiced people who would rather give MS props than give the Williams sisters and their family any recognition, and are/can be equally negatively biased as some CAs imo.
By the way Steff Graf is married to Agassi, so she is not missing.
Didn't you and many of your ilk try to make MS the face of American tennis, until she declared as Russian to play in Fed Cup for her country last year or the year before, perhaps in an attempt to participate in the Olympics?LOL
The Williamses have done more for their sport and as philantropists than these other folks you have mentioned in your spiel. They have also worked hard to further recognition of Women in general all over the world and women athletes thus raising the compensation of women athletes in general what ever their sport.
Serena is the highest female earner in sports today, having earned over 24 million dollars plus so far. If she was not doing something good would she have earned that much money playing tennis? She may not be earning as much a MS in endorsements but hey, I doubt she cares as she is an entrepreneur and has her own businesses if I am not mistaken and so does Venus who wears and own her own clothing line EleVen.
Whether you admire those bodacious babes or accept what they and their family have accomplished or not, is not going to change the facts that they are greatly admired Americans of the first order, who are living their lives and participating/competing in professional tennis on their own terms imo.
What is my "ilk?" Presumptuous on your part to classify me isn't it?
I form my opinion by watching and talking with others, the Williams Sisters are not well liked by "My ilk" and thousands of others who prefer true sportsmanship, we hardly need to be told by you or any other who is "good or bad"
Steffi being married to Agassi doesn't quiet equate to her playing now does it, but you already knew that I assume
No Ivy League (How appropriate) I did not, but when anyone criticises the Williams the race issue is always brought up so I injected my reasoning prior to accusations from people who live in Ivory Towers
It's kind of like Mike Tyson: Undoubtedly one of the greatest heavyweight of all time but one of the worst sportsmen of all time, and if you criticise him you are "Racist"
I admire the Williams for their skill but despise them for their crass attitudes and lack of sportsmanship, quite a subjective matter and an opinion that is apparently shared by many. It is almost as classless as those that attack a poster for having an opinion instead of refuting the subject of the post

Sean-Maine - seems like you pulled the race card yourself.

I love the MSNBC sports polls. Jesus H. Christ, what kind of bass-ackward poll question is that, when the options include one sister or the other, or NEITHER? What happened to BOTH?!? And why should we choose? Did the sports world suddenly run out of more relevant questions, even within the Williams universe?
Here are some better questions:
- Why is Richard Williams given any credibility or asked any questions by respected journalists?
- Does the success of the Williams sisters increase or decrease your viewership of women's professional tennis?
- Why do nearly all of the MSNBC poll questions, in sports or not, really suck?
The Natural - while I agree with you - these questions are meant for the 'broader readership' - get too indepth or technical and you have lost at least 50% of the participants. Many polls are simply meant to inflame - who do you 'like' quickly degrades into name calling and insults - then some joker throws in political affiliation. It works - everyone winds up throwing everything at each other!
Sad commentary.
