Isn't it unfortunate that we have come so far in this country toward getting rid of racial prejudices by electing a black president and now a Supreme Court justice who is hispanic, yet we still have to read such racist remarks as have been espoused in some of these postings.

Those posting comments that Sotomayer is racist should read what they themselves have posted! If you are basing your conclusions on the Ricci case, the appeals court followed the existing precedent of the Supreme Court when they made their decision. They could not create precedent! When the case came before the Supreme Court, the SC changed the precedent. This was their ability to re-interpret law or their understanding of the law as it is written in the Constitution or amendments.

However, if you base your conclusion on the much heard "wise latina" statement, perhap you should read the statement in the context in which it was given. When taken out of context, the comment does, indeed, sound racist. Read in context, however, the phrase is not racist. The worst that Judge Sotomayer could be accused of is a bad choice of words! Had the judge used the word "woman" instead of latina, would you then have attacked her because she was a woman?

Thirdly, if you think the judge will change the court alignment, don't be too sure. She was first appointed to the bench by George H. W. Bush, a republican! She was appointed to the appeals court by Bill Clinton, a democrat! If anything, the judge is a centerist, neither republican or democrat, and her rulings have shown that. How does this make her a left-wing nut case?

I could not have said it better myself. I ‘m glad someone on here actually understands what is happening. Most of these posters are extremely naïve and that scares me most of all! And I don't appreciate how leading the poll above is! None of the three responses clearly express what I feel: that she is a very sad excuse for a juror who will (probably) make rulings based on personal feelings and not on what is fair and a good interpretation of the constitution. (Or at least that is what she seems like based on her political history. Hopefully she will be better than that, but since she was nominated by Obama I'm not betting on it.) In fact, can you give me any evidence at all that Sotomayor's rulings give any precedence to the things you say?

Number 1 - I do not fear Hispanics. I fear any person who thinks they are better than anyone else in any ethnic group i.e. Sotomayer thinks she's better than white people because she's a female Latina. yeah . . . that's open-minded and engenders trust.

Number 2 - If we only count the legal Hispanics and do not include the illegal immigrants, are you still the largest minority?

Number 3 - I don't believe that any one group will necessarily make our nation greater. I believe our nation will become greater when we cast aside what makes us different and join together as one unified country: there are no African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans - we are just Americans - period !
