This article has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with discrimination!!!! Apperently the French RULES for use of a pool state that EVERYONE, I repeat EVERYONE, has to wear x,y and z. It doesn't say that only "burquinis", which is essentially a jogging suit made for water, is banned. The French are banning ALL types of clothing, with the exception of speedo's for men and REAL bikini's for women, in order to use the pool. Based on those FACTS, where does the discrimination against muslims exist?

I forgot to mention that the article clearly states that she is not a tourist, but a convert. So by being a French native, she must know the rules for using a pool.

I think most people are missing the point that its not the swimsuit itself that is unhygienic, but the fact that it covers nearly every inch of her body. This makes it very difficult to see if she has any contagious skin infections or diseases! Granted a bikini could do the same thing, yet its much more unlikely to do so.

It states in the article that the concern with street wear type clothing or swimsuits that use a lot of fabric is that there is more room for bacteria and infectious germs to hide within the molecules. Just because you can't see them, doesn't mean that they are not there. Even if she showers with her burquini on, the potential for germs to reappear on the fabric is greater than if she was to wear a bikini or regular swimsuit because there is so much more fabric, hence more molecules that make up the burquini.

To that end, by trying to say that this is racism of any sort is a misconception and an injustice to society simply because if a muslim guy was to go to the pool wearing his speedo, which they are allowed to do in accordance with their religion, then there would be no way he would be rejected admission into the pool because his swimming attire would be in accordance with the rules of the pool.

The burquini can be seen in "Le Figaro" newspaper. I just do not understand how anyone can swim in such an outfit. I believe these women want to scream discrimination and most of them want to go to a public pool to cause trouble.

Western tourists ARE allowed to wear bikinis on public beaches is many Muslim contries, from Morocco to Egypt to Oman to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It is false that Muslim countries ban westerners from their beaches. The UAE, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and most others have plenty of westerners that do what they want there. I used to LIVE in Saudi Arabia as an expat and I seem to remember making plenty of trips to the beach wearing western bathing suits and not once was I ever banned, or were the other western bathing suit wearing people there.... tourists or locals.

I too loved in Saudi Arabia not too long ago and those type of things were banned. Now if someone was being sneeky or just didnt get caught then thats a horse of another color. The non Muslims there that are teachers etc have to at least wear an abayah.

The point that I wanted to make is that people need to realize that islam is very different than what we are used to. It has very violent and inhumane teachings that are applicable to this very day. For example:

Death penalty for those who choose to leave the islamic faith.

It is not the muslims fault. They are normal people like anyone else. This issue is with islamic teaching which is incompatible with societies who are making an effort to be more humane.

How do u know that they don't? maybe ur right about 1 or 2 countries that have strict rules for public conduct the rest r mostly liberal, many foreigners and Americans in particular live n Moslim countries and they enjoy the rights allowed for everyone, and in some cases they receive preferrential treatment, i know this because i been to many Moslim countries and i can tell u u need to travel there or do research on ur own to know the truth instead of being blinded by ur prejudice and misconceptions.

I have known of women who visited even "liberal" muslim countries, only to find that they have to keep their head covered, they are not allowed to drive, they are not allowed to sit with their husbands in restaurants, etc. Still, these women were told by their husband's employers that they MUST follow the rules outside of the living compound or they will be shipped back to the US. When I go to the grocery store, for health reasons I have to wear shoes and a shirt. I understand this and don't yell "Discrimination" because my religion says that I should never wear shoes (it doesn't, but there might be one out there that does). When you visit a foreign country you don't get to carry your country's rules with you...you have to follow the rules of your host. The article did not say if she was a tourist or a native, but either way I don't think she has a leg to stand on.

Please tell me which ones I should go to where I can carry my bible and my daughters can go swimming in their bikinis and go shopping unchaperoned. Which of the many Moslem countries can I visit where I will not have to worry about being kidnapped, persecuted or have my daughters or wife thrown in jail (or worse). Since you know them so well please tell me, specifically, where I can go and be free to do this with no repercussions.

Turkey (specifically Istanbul and other cities on the country's western coast) or Dubai of the UAE will work. Part of Turkey is actually on the continent of Europe, and they have a secular government to boot. I'd stay close to Istanbul though, as the farther east you go in the country, the more conservative Muslims you encounter that aren't as friendly to outsiders (though I never really felt in danger while I was there). And Dubai is practically built from the group up to accomodate tourists, specifically Western ones.

Will a church or synagogue allow you in in a bikini? No. They are private places that are in the jurisdiction of their congregants. So your point is irrelevant to the discussion. This woman is a French born citizen, who probably pays taxes, and was not allowed to swim at a public place--not governed by the same restrictions as a Muslim temple (mosque for you more educated folks) because her clothes were long. How a long bikini is more dangerous than a short one the French municipality has not explained. And given France's recent Taliban like history of religious discrimination, against Jews and Muslims, she has a right to suspect discrimination in the case.

We must ask, has the French government banned some of the longer, less revealing bikinis than chubbier women wear? And, given that this is obviously a bikini and not "street clothes" as the French officials harp, what exactly are the guidelines for length of clothing in the pool?

Again......ITS NOT THE SWIMWEAR ITSELF, its the SKIN DISEASES and INFECTIONS which can be hidden by such swimwear. You can argue that bikini's do the same thing, though its much less likely to do so.

If there was scientific proof offered in this case I might consider it fair. This lady could wear a wet suit at the beach and surf. That's pretty innocuous and I doubt anyone would say anything or even look twice.

The truth of the matter is there is no such thing as a Muslim swimsuit PERIOD!. I am a Muslim women and very proud of it and I know my deen. I dont agree with what she did only bcus she's going against what Islam says about guarding her modesty. Going outside in pants and a shirt is not the proper way for a Muslimah to dress in any country period! Our book(Quran) and the Sunnah of Muhammad peace and blessing be upon him is very clear in that. As far as being in a Muslim country and having to cover up yes its true and there are no exceptions for that kind of behavior. Now i would have a problem if they told her she couldnt wear her islamic clothing outside in restaurants, while shopping etc bcus thats her religious right. Or if they denied her from a passport or Id bcus she was covered. Those things yes make a fuss, go to court and May Allah give you the victory ameen.....But this here was a joke!!! Allahu Akbar! To say that this is racism or segregation is an insult to all of society. Do you think that if a muslim guy wearing swim trunks or a speedo went to the pool that they would prevent him from entering? No! The reason is because he would be wearing proper attire as allowed by the rules of the pool. The problem is not that the person is muslim or black or purple or American or Chinese... or whatever. The problem is that rules which have been put in place for the greater good of society are not being followed by someone wanting to enter the pool. That is the problem! Just because a woman is restricted by her religion (which does not restrict men in the same way) does not mean that there is racism or prejudist segregation. If anything... within her own religion there is more segregation and sexism than there is in the society that she lives in.

As far as hygiene goes. It states in the article that the rule about the type of swimsuits patrons could wear was established because of the possibility to spread infection and germs with clothing that uses more fabric. The more fabric you have, the more molecules are present which are able to harbor more microscopic germs and infections. That is why they don't want you to wear street clothing type attire. Not because you came off the street, but with prolonged exposure to a moist environment such a pool setting, there is more a risk of germs and infections so the more fabric you have, the more you can pick up or transmit those germs. It serves a purpose to protect society and also to protect herself as well.

Personally, I don't want to swim in a pool with a bunch of people that are more susceptible to carry a larger amount of infectious germs because they are wearing more fabric and I don't want to swim in a pool with naked people either because what fun would it be to find pubic hairs floating at the top of the water all over the place or accidentally rub up to someones herpes infested genitalia. That is just not sanitary!!

She does have every right to swim in the pool as long as she follows the rules, even if they are stupid. Should we all be allowed to make up our own rules as we go? I think speed limits are stupid but I still don't speed because, it's against the rules.

You miss that in France you HAVE to wear skin tight bathing suits to the pool. The popular bermuda shorts in the US are not permitted in French pools - hence the popularity of speedos. They said that in the article.
