The NCAA is taking "madness" to a new level, and it's all because of money, not what is good for the game. Even the current system with 64 teams is way too many. It makes the conference tournament mostly irrelevant. My vote is to only invite the conference champions to the NCAA Tournament. I also think the conference tournaments should not invite all their teams to play. Let's make the regular season count for something. Otherwise college basketball ends up like the NBA.
Should only be 48 or 56 teams. But if this agreement means all games are televised than I am all for it. What are the 4 stations that will show the games? TNT? CBS sports cable channel?
It beats the 90+ that had been thrown around, so I guess it is a reasonable compromise. Since the $ rules everything we probably couldn't have hoped for better.
64, 68, who cares??? Abolish automatic invites to the conference tournament winners. All conference season winners should get the automatic invite. Fill in the rest of the field with the best of the rest. Very simple to do but way too complicated for the nimble minds at the NCAA.
Since keeping it the same was probably not even considered by the committee, going 68 seems like the least amount of damage to me. Better than 96 or 128, yeesh!
The NCAA tourney was a 65 team tournament (if you consider the play-in game), and those two teams, No. 64 and 65 seeds have never had an impact on the tournament. I don't see what adding three more teams is going to do to make things more interesting or exciting. Yeah, more games equal more money, but it waters down the quality of the overall tournament and takes three more teams out of the NIT tourney. Maybe that's the object. Still, 64 teams worked fine. 68? Big yawn.
As long as it fits in my bracket I could not care less. Actually, they are messing with one of the last sports events that I care about. Oh well I guess I'll just go play golf.
These people at the NCAA are about exploiting college athletes for profit while all the athletes get is free educations, free clothes, and free cash...while the hard working students that attend college are up to their EYEBALLS in debt.
They should use their "lucritive" broadcast deals to lower tuition costs for all students not just the ones that happen to be good at basketball.
Get real..... Why don't you just ask the schools to pay you to go there! The big sports pay for the minor sports, which many students benefit from. The big sports also create a spirit, that is important, and don't forget the people who support their alma maters financially to support the programs. Deal with your debt. Go to scholl, study, and don't be such a flaming liberal, Obama loving jerk! Hopefully when you graduate, there will be something there for you, if Obama doesn't screw that up too.....
Thankfully I am debt free...i worked my way through school and came out the other end a prosperous individual...but I am a minority...
You can claim school spirit all you want...the idea of "athletics" brings in alumni money and boasts school spirit still doesn't change the fact that select few get free rides. Do you think that Nike cares about the average Biology student at UNC...no they care about selling hats and jerseys so their CEO can make his boat payments.
Anything to generate more revenue would be the reasoning of this to me. It's not Pro Sports, but if they can make a bit more money and stretch the field out a bit further, why not. I am not in agreement with this move, but $$$ usually are the final factor as to a motive of this nature.
Where does everyone keep coming up with 64 teams? It has been 65 teams now for almost a decade. Adding 3 teams now just means each region will have a play-in game instead of just one region.

Expansion is about money, not basketball. Look at the pros. They play all year to eliminate only a handful of teams, then play long, seemingly endless series till you finally get to their version of the Final Four.
By the way, I remember when it was 16 league champions and about 8 independents. The highest nationally ranked teams had a bye, the rest had a "play in." The "Sweet Sixteen" was the Regionals, and then on to the Final Four. All the great John Wooden UCLA champions played in that format.
This is a natural result of the exponential increase of office bracket pools, and the growing trend of outsourcing such brackets to India. There were 1000 times more brackets filled out this than last year. Getting a perfect bracket has become to easy, so we need bump up the exponent to keep the accomplishment meaningful. Watch this video for a brief explanation:
When you think of how many really undeserving teams are included at 64, and that there is the really stupid NIT tournament behind this, you come to realize that this is all about money to the netwroks, the NCAA, the sponsors, and the schools. The viewers are subjected to tuning out or watching so many teams that truly deserve to stay at home.
4 teams? Waste of time, that's just change to make a change. It's also messing w/ something that works pretty well.

STOP the MADNESS at 64!
Better than 84 or 96...would invariably include much mediocrity...like college bowl games between 6-5 teams.
Now...abolish the NIT.

Sixty four is too many. It's all about money. Don't watch the games, don't care.

And for you information...I am a republican.

64 teams is enough; however, its a joke to read that the NCAA President is
worried if the expansion went to 98 teams that players would miss classroom
time. It's all about money and I believe most college basketball players haven't
been inside a calssroom.
