I have a very simple philosophy about Facebook...if you don't want people to know don't post it...the only thing private now a days is what you have in your head or locked away at home or in a bank...just don't be stupid about what you post...and no matter how many times Facebook changes their policy it wont effect you...
That is a great argument, but you can't stop what other people post. Case in point, my Father-in-law thinks Facebook is the DEVIL, because a friend posted about his engagement even before he had a chance to tell anyone else. As this also isn't a Facebook issue, they can't control what other people post, but we have come into a society of sharing all if all that have access. Even if it isn't you posting.
The notion that there is no real expectation of privacy online will eventually kill the experience. Clearly, anything you post online can and probably will be read by others, either by your own intention, or as a result of an eventual breach of security. I trust certain sites and organizations to protect my information to the utmost of their ability, but even then, those sites can't guarantee security under all circumstances. I take my chances at those sites that will really try. With Facebook, I deleted my account.
I did create a totally false FB identity using none of my own exact information, and told my closest friends and my family what my "new name" is. They can stay connected to me that way, if they choose to. Most have. There is no real risk if my personal info isn't absolutely accurate. Plus I get to feel like I'm getting one over on FB, as well. There is always a risk that my comments might be seen by strangers without my knowledge, but that doesn't bother me if they don't know who I am or where to find me.
This obviously would not work with most business contacts, but I don't use FB for that purpose.
thats exactly what i say!!
if you dont anyone to know your info. then dont give it out.
like your phone#
if you dont no one to know it. dont post it... simple as that.
Private? "Please Rob Me .com" came about after and because of Facebook. Why do so many people think that "their page" was ever private?
Who cares? Facebook is for fun, I think anyone who is posting critical, life changing (or jeopardizing) info online is probably doing other stupid things as well. It won't be Facebook that takes them down. I think the worst that can happen is someone sees a drunk photo or two, big deal.
I won't be updating anything at all on facebook in the future. No more photos, no more messages to friends. Nothing. Got that Zuckerberg? In fact, I already removed tons of.
I went through the 2 week "are you sure you want to delete your account" process.
It is an good feeling to be out of FB.
Why did you sign up to a social networking site in the first place? Go home and stop @!$%#ing it up for the rest of us!
i don't think of all of you as real either nor do i want to know you. i find peering into the human spectacle at the naked conscious level quite amusing. now you know too much about me already. i will have to kill you.
Facebook was cool when it was limited to college students only and it provided a way to keep in contact and up to date with your friends from high school as they went out into the world. Opening it up to the general public resulted in unprecedented growth such that security measures could not evolve fast enough to protect the privacy of it's users. Personally, I find it troublesome my little cousins and family can see what I'm up to. You're ultimately responsible for what is available out there. Check your privacy settings and don't post/remove what you don't want to be seen.

I used to think this as well. But based on their recent "improvements", there is clearly no desire by Facebook to protect users' privacy.
I think what has happened is social networking has happened faster than society was ready for it. It is incumbent on Facebook and other sites to protect their members insofar as they are able and to stay ahead of the negative ramifications as much as is possible. However, it is ultimately the job of the users to monitor what they are posting and who they are sharing it with. This is the communication of today and the future and it is really pretty awesome what it can do. It just requires all of us to adjust our thinking in terms of our own privacy and vigilance.
Facebook does not even want to protect your privacy. They are SPECIFICALLY looking to exploit your information, for profit. A nicely sorted list of names, ages, and email addresses associated with people who like music, scuba-diving, or Parakeets is worth a ton of cash. Not everyone provides every little clue to Facebook willingly, but that's o.k. with them. They will take whatever data they do have, package it, and sell it for profit. Their database is where their value is.
Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Tweeter, Twaddler...whatever! All are just places created to make people feel important and prey upon their egos. Anyone dumb enough to join deserves whatever happens to them. Why do you think these "free" sites are created? Certainly not out of the goodness of someone's heart. It'a all about info gathering, and every little bit of it is used by someone. You're a fool if you join one of those "social networking" sites. Want friends? Get out of the house. Go visit a pub. Join a real club. Do some volunteer work. JOIN THE REAL WORLD.
After several invitations, I joined Face-book. Now after two weeks of membership, I have to say why bother? I think I will stick with phone calls and e-mails.

Well said.
Keep your judgment to yourself. Many of us have friends all over the country (and the world, for that matter), and it's a lot easier to keep up to date on each other's lives via something like FB for the very fact that we're working, socializing, etc. in real life and don't have time to be on the phone and e-mail with each person for hours at a time!! By the way, I (and most people I know) don't meet new "friends" on FB, nor do we connect to anyone we don't already know in real life. (Twitter is a different story, which is why I don't tweet anymore.)

It's not just about the photos. If it was, I would agree with you. Reread the article.
me too. after being asked repeatedly I signed on. And honestly it WAS fun for a while (two to three months) after that, I found that I was hiding certain people and even 'unfriending' certain blights from the past who insisted on daily contact. I found it to be a horrendous time thief, and the 'games' were driving me NUTs as friends demanded to share eggs and pillow fights. I deactivated it recently but again, people are telling me that it's still pops up???? I'm no technie and have followed all FB prompts but it seems like they'll make it like Ms. Haversham's wedding table in 'Great Expectations." Just hanging out in FB ether to rot and wither..............................too much noise and no substance when people should be WORKING not running their 'farms.' God help us all. It's a profound RELIEF to have nuked it.
Ya know that happened to me to! Just don't add anything else on it and let your friends know to defriend you, eventually FB won't have anything else to keep posting your page. Good luck!
Well duhh it's part of the infowar network.
Haven't you heard of the Information Awareness Office?

Unfortunately, those algorithms try to establish your behavior patterns on newsvine and other popular blogging sites as well.
Its just a breeding ground for child molestors. Just like myspace and twitter. Even tho they got age limits kids still get around it by making themselfs older and then the parents wonder why are my kids getting targeted. Let me explain if your son or daughter says there 18 on them sites but there really 13 then its your kids fault and yours for not paying attn. what the do online.
I agree and voted yes! Too much information of what everyone is doing and where they're going to be on what date is far too much sharing for my liking! The only ones that matter are the ones you are with now and have relationships with! Everyone else that you haven't seen in years should be far out of your head by now.P.S. If you lost contact years ago, there was a reason for it! The relationship wasn't strong enough to make it to the future, so let it go!:)
Privacy is dead on Facebook and I had my concern about Google. This article just reinforces my concerns. Watch your wallet next because it's going to get "Zuckerfied" when Facebook starts charging. Your going to have to pay for "Facetime" No pun intended. It's going to happen. You see FB has reached a critical mass of users who are entrenched and won't want to leave. It's actually brilliant and well executed. Users are treated as pawns and only can stay in the game if they "pay to play" Well read more of my rants at http://www.bontemedical.com/blog

I'm furious at these bold-faced attempts to violate FB users' privacy while pretending that they're "enhancing" our experience. I'd love to have another option besides FB. Hey, MySpace used to be the online spot and now it's a graveyard. We could do the same thing to Facebook!!
Your right Myspace is a graveyard, were in a wiser and better place to be!! So let's let FB be where they want to be, I just want to know more of it!!!!
Why is Facebook a "necessity?" Are we fast becoming a nation of zombies controlled by the internet and "social networking" sites? See people FACE TO FACE to network. There's real value to that. Use Facebook. Twitter, etc., and you will continue to have your computer compromised and your privacy violated.
I assume everyone is looking. I try to keep my blogging elsewhere, I try.
I don't think internet "privacy" exists, or it ever existed. "internet" & "privacy"? MYTH.
What's the big deal with facebook? You put on what "you" want unless, someone is holding a gun to your head! It's a gossipy little thingamajig that you have fun with. Simply put, don't post something that "you" don't want "everyone" in the world to know about......How difficult can that be? C'mon now!
Facebook installs tracking cookies on your computer. It doesn't matter to me because I don't have a facebook account but other people use my computer to check facebook. And yes, the information is sold and also given to the IAO for purposes of patterning your behavior. Most virus scans will detect the cookie and you can rid of it easily but it will reinstall everytime you go to facebook.
Facebook doesnt install tracking cookies idiot...that is your computer that does that to make it easier to locate previous sites you have been too...disable Cookies if you dont like it, and Id like to see some proof that Facebook info is being sold...

I closed my Facebook account. TMI that I didn't want strangers to poke into. Who needs to know who my friends are? I know! That's enough
