There have been many deaths due to taser use so I dont really think its funny. Plus, I think excessive taser use by police has reached a whole new level from tasering a 10 year old child to the elderly. It is a good tool, but i think police abuse it WAY too much.
I was just wondering if you have looked into the statistics of people dying from being tasered. It would surprise you. Police are supposed to be trained adequately so that they shouldn't have to use these devices. I saw something on UTube the other day of a high school being tasered for no apparent reason and then beaten up. Just keep giving the police office more authority and next it could be happening to you
The only time I believe tasering is going to cause a greater problem is if it is used to subdue someone who is concealing a device... i.e. suicide bomber.
Given that an immediate security response is necessary to react to any risk such as this, taser him. Just make sure the guy has not got a bomb on his butt.
I don't know that it's all that funny, but a proportional response? Absolutely. The kid knew he was where he wasn't supposed to be. Hop that barrier, you lose your right not to be brought down in the quickest, most efficient non-lethal manner available.
In general I'd say absolutely, taser the dumb a$$, especially if the resist. I guess if they peaceably give-up after they've had their 15 seconds of fame, then I'd say they should just slam their face in the dirt, cuff em, and drag their carcass off the field. In all cases they should be taken to the Bull Pen, where pitchers can use them as back stops.
Except calling it non lethal is a bit of a joke. What about that 14 year old girl that the cop shot in the head with a tazer and it went into her skull? She would probably argue that point, if she could speak.
If you are stupid enough to put yourself PURPOSELY in harms way.... If you are Hell bent on trespassing on the field....If you have the SLIGHTEST clue or are smart enough to read the news about terrorism lately.....If your Mommy and Daddy taught you even the slightest things about right and wrong and if you aren't totally BRAIN DEAD.....then you probably wouldn't run out onto a professional ball field asking to have something happen to you. The kid is a freaking IDIOT. He got what he came for. A little excitement and 20,000 volts worth of education and everyone on his block pointing their fingers at him saying, "There goes the idiot!" from now on!
Tasering is not always non-lethal. This is a juvenile. This is a harmless prank that is no threat to anyone. What is wrong with the public when it can't take a joke like a childhood prank without punishment and pain. The fascist are out of control. We need to taser our government official's, stock brokers and all the morons that join the military to fight in illegal wars if you ask me. Idiot or no idiot tasing is torture and not funny at all.
Chris....I agree it is funny when someone gets tased. That stupid look on their face that forms as soon as they realize "holy sh-t Im being shocked"....People do stupid things without thinking there are consequences. Some people don't have that gatekeeper in their brains which tells them they are either being a bit to controversial, or maybe I shouldnt be doing this....I think everyone is taking this taser thing a bit too seriously. They made fun of it in "Meet the Parents". Ben Stiller's character was tased by a police officer. That was freakin hilarious....he looked like a fish flopping around on the ground. I say tough crap...that kid reaped what he sowed in front of thousands of baseball fans. He won't be charging the field anytime soon....
The fascist are out of control. We need to taser our government official's, stock brokers and all the morons that join the military to fight in illegal wars if you ask me. Idiot or no idiot tasing is torture and not funny at all.....
Kenny, Kenny....easy lad....easy....take your Prozac lad and calm down. Jeeeeeze ums.
Anyone with epilepsy or seizure disorder is at risk for death from tasering. Some seizures involve a person just staring at nothing for several minutes, a person in this condition would not be able to respond to a verbal command from police or security. Save tasers for true emergencies, not for ball park crowd amusements.
Not only funny, but hilarious. You can choose your actions but you cant always choose the consequences. Maybe he should have listened to his Dad when he called him to ask permission.
The use of a Taser, on that idiot, sent a message across this entire planet and hopefully, to the next idiot who thinks that what "Sparky" did on the field maybe wasn't so smart after all, especially the thought of 20,000 volts coursing through your body and landing face first in the sod. Brilliant! A regular epiphany!
ROFL - that is classic. What an idiot. I would say to the people that are against the tasering- maybe he should have stopped then when they told him too. He chose to keep running around like an idiot, he chose to get tasered. Its not like they ran at him and the first thing they did was taser the guy, no- they chased him in circles a bit before doing that.
Man, some of the people here are such sissy's. If you do something stupid, you deserve what you get. Besides, if they tackled him and he got hurt then you would all be crying how they were too rough bringing him down. What would have you suggested to stop the idiot then? A time out? morons...
Hey Ken Waltz...Your comment about the military was wrong. People join the military to protect our freedoms so idiots like you can run your stupid mouths without thinking. If you dont like the way it is, then your freedom to move to another country is one of those being protected. If you need money for it I am sure there are enough people out there willing to buy you a one way ticket with the extra money they have from living in our free society. Obviously the Philly's kid did something the NORMAL person would not do. How many morons have been saved by using tasers ? Maybe we should go back to shooting them with bullets instead of a taser ? This makes sense doesn't it Ken ?
"Tasering is a reasonable non-lethal means to control a situation - and its FUNNY!"
HA. Agreed on both points.
What are the police supposed to do, just stand there in the middle of the field while the guy runs the bases, turns a few cartwheels, poses for pictures with the mascot and waves to his mortified family in the stands? Come on. You keep your ass in your seat where you belong or you pay the price, period.
Those who comment here about how "justified" this act of tasering was for this man's stupid behavior would shudder if it became mandatory for ALL stupid acts of behavior. Not all idiots act stupid in stadiums. Try the car, the home, the workplace...
I don't think there is enough tasering going on these days to be quite honest Hans. You disobey a direct order from a policeman, you are opening up a world of hurt. If you evade arrest, or do not comply with what a police officer is asking you, you are getting tased. If thats the only way people learn that they cannot do stupid things and expect there to be zero consequences then so be it....
Tasering is a lot safer than being tackled by two or three fat cops. As for it being lethal, you probably have heard about every single incident that went haywire in the world. Possible bad reactions are extremely rare. Stupid has consequences, and taser is one of the results. Stupid should painful in the butt or in the wallet.
Actually Chris it has been shown time and again that it isnt as non lethal as many people believe. This person wasnt threatening and was non violent. It was overkill.
I dont know that it is funny, but I agree if you are dumb enough to run out there well than pay the price. And if paying the price is a taser so be it. But make it know at all sporting events this will be the norm and you may stop some of the idiots ffrom doing these things.
Tasering is NOT a non-lethal way to subdue someone. Many people have died from them.
Dasvet, I live in a pretty small city where a 16 year old was killed getting tasered. It does happening, and the potential death of a person, even if its very small, should not be happening in a situation like that. Sure, there are times when its appropriate, but that was not one of them. Teams should be telling them not to do it, because if someone does die, they will lose a huge lawsuit for 10's of millions.
Maybe to you it's funny. I am curious how you would react
Anyone stupid enough to pull a stunt like that deserves what he got. What if that was a suicide bomber... I'll bet you anything that tasering the bastard wouldn't sound like a bad idea. The point is: Nobody knows what intentions the lunatic had... the best way is to bring him down as quickly as possible. Nowdays one can't be to careful.
1 restored, on-topic. 1.8 deleted, Jamie655321 suggesting another Viner needs to be tasered. Cut it out. You're suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor - repeatedly.
...
Tasering is probably better than the alternative: tackling done by a security guard who may not be great at tackling/inclined to refrain from driving the person who they've been chasing for forty-five seconds while a crowd cheers them into the turf.
Yes, I see it as an acceptable method. Anyone without personal boundaries and self imposed limits, need to be reminded that all public forums are not his personal forum to disrupt. Clearly here was a failure by his parents to teach him acceptable social interactions.
They want attention - give 'em attention. Maybe watching people laugh when these dopes hit the turf will give other attention-seeking morons something to think about.
Some seizures involve a person just staring at nothing for several minutes, a person in this condition would not be able to respond to a verbal command from police or security.
And they wouldn't be doing anything to warrant being zapped, either.
I think it's a great idea! Stupid people deserve it! Parents should teach their kids how to act and kids should know that if you act like an idiot, there are consequences!
I agree with Tyler. I think the kid was better off being tased than tackled and slammed to the turf which can also result in broken bones, internal injuries and death. Plus the tasing was pretty entertaining. I draw the line at using those shotguns loaded with bean bags. I'd say 'stay off the field' but the whole thing is more fun to watch than the game itself so the more the merrier. Would it be going too far to have ushers start tasing people for talking during a movie?
The taser is a less often fatal alternative to a firearm. Make no mistake, tasers kill. Over 400 people in the US have died since tasers were adopted by police.
The odds of surviving a taser assualt are better than if police simply shot people who didn't immediately comply with their demands. But we have to ask, was the only alternative to using the taser to use a firearm? If the answer to that question is no, then there is no excuse for using the taser.
The kid's lucky... in the old days, one of Rizzo's finest would have set a German Shepherd on him and then he and his friends would have beaten him into a coma in tunnels under the Vet.
I would have said no, but with the amount of crazy people out there it's impossible to tell if it's just a case of some kid having fun trying to get on TV, some drunk taking a dare or some psychopath who wants to do harm to one of the athletes or officials. The security guards owe it to the players on the field and the fans in the stands and at home to provide a safe environment for everyone involved. Maybe they shouldn't resort to the taser immediately, but the longer a person runs the more chance there is for something to go wrong.
I think the police officers shouldn't be allowed to fall into such bad shape that they can't catch a drunk guy running across a walled off field. The tazer should be the last resort for situations requiring non lethal force against an unarmed citizen.
Compare it to waterboarding for a different perspective. Running water over a terrorists head vs metal probes stuck into your body with thousands of volts running through them.
allen, that is adsurd. comparing it to waterboarding? you watch tooooo much tv. get a clue. it was absolutely appropriate. and stop assuming, especially bad assumptions. you really think those guards are that out of shape? probably not, and to catch a 17 year old kid, (i'm sure you were a lot quicker at 17) and do you relly think a 17 yr old was drunk in the 8th at a ball game? mostl likely not. you are not very smart.
Can the tasers be set at lower voltage? I would not like it to be the first line of defense - but I have to agree - the number of people that could do harm cannot be underestimated. Do you remember a few years back when a (drunk) father & son jumped onto the field and started beating up on one of the coaches. The security guards are charged with the protection of players and fans. This kid will now be on all the morning talk shows to tell his story - thereby granting him his 15 minutes of fame and not to mention he will probably make a few bucks. Hell if I could net about $20,000 (or more with the lawsuit I am sure he will file) - I might jump onto the field to bet tasered myself.
Actually... Tasering has the potential to be lethal. It is not 'non' lethal... its 'less than lethal', but can be lethal sometimes.
Tackling or not catching the person would be a better idea. As long as he poses no threat just kick him out of the stadium.
Or.... we can equip fans with tasers and use them on the folks securing the field. I mean, they are 'non' lethal...right? So no charges of assault, or anything like that.... right?
Derek, that is quite a leap, giving them to the fans? They are a device to enable police to secure a situation. Keep in mind, the kid was warned. He was warned when he started to run on the field and prior to the game the management at the park has a statment on the big screen explaining what is expected of the fans. It is common sense. He knew what he did was wrong, he called his father first! His father told him he probably should not do it and the kid chose to do it anyway! He made his choice and now he must deal with the consequences. I hope if he does sue, the suit is not allowed. There needs to be a form of security that officials can provide without having to worry about being sued. Remember, he willingly made the choice.
"Tackling or not catching the person would be a better idea. As long as he poses no threat just kick him out of the stadium."
I'm sorry Derek, but getting tazed and falling under your own weight is much safer than having a couple of guards slam you down and jump on you.
And how on earth would NOT CATCHING THE PERSON be a better idea? I pose no threat, so should I just sit along the warning track and watch the game? NO! You are trespassing when you run onto the field, and once you evade police and security, you become a suspect on the run, and since nobody knows who you are or what your agenda is, you must be taken down as soon as possible.
Don't you remember the drunk guy and son who climbed over and beat up the base coach? Don't you remember the guy who jumped onto the tennis court and stabbed Seles in the back? Don't you understand the safety that is in place in a post 911 world?
You may not like it, but that's how it is now. Idiots pay the price. The tazing was totally justified.
Derek, that is quite a leap, giving them to the fans?
It was hyperbole.
They are a device to enable police to secure a situation. Keep in mind, the kid was warned.
Doesn't matter, they didn't perform due dilligence in using everything but possibly lethal force. Police have alot of tools to control a situation. Depending on whether violence is present, they are restricted in their use.
I hope if he does sue, the suit is not allowed. There needs to be a form of security that officials can provide without having to worry about being sued.
There is a type of security that you won't get sued for. Its called "Not using possibly lethal force against a non-violent perpertrator".
No matter if what he did was wrong... tasing is a stretch. Did they try everything else first? Nope.
What else were they supposed to do? They ran around for a long time and the kid kept evading. Are they supposed to get out slingshots? Then work up to lasso's? And if blinding him with mirrors and using tripwire doesn't work, THEN USE A TAZER?
It's clear that you are in the minority on this issue Derek and nothing anyone says will change what you're spouting, but you are wrong.
And if you watched the video, you will see the kid immediately being lifted up and him walking on his own off of the field apprehended. He is FINE. The enforcement/security did exactly what they should have and it worked perfectly.
Once the kid gets home, his Dad should taze him again.
It's clear that you are in the minority on this issue Derek and nothing anyone says will change what you're spouting, but you are wrong.
Being in the majority certainly doesn't make you right. I can list alot of societies where the majority was in the wrong, with detrimental consequences. Don't fool yourself on that one. Being in the minority is sometimes the best place to be. Legally, I am in the right - FYI.
And if you watched the video, you will see the kid immediately being lifted up and him walking on his own off of the field apprehended. He is FINE. The enforcement/security did exactly what they should have and it worked perfectly.
The chance that he would have belated arrythmia is high. This means that his heart gets off beat, tries to readjust sometime that night - and he goes into cardiac arrest. Most people who die from tasers die HOURS after seemingly being fine. Best to educate yourself first before making medical assertions.
And they didn't run after him for that long. With all those athletes, you are telling me that not a single person could catch this boy? What about forcing him to an exit?
Derek- Sorry sissy. You act like a fool, you should be treated like a fool. Tazer is a great tool and is a minimal risk to the tazed. Despite the silly comments from you and other spoiled brats on here, the world is not for YOU to do with as YOU please. YOUR ACTIONS have consequences. It is not for me to put up with your childish decisions. Grow-up clowns.
And what would you be saying if the guy broke his arm while being tackled? Or slams his head into the ground and goes into a coma. Heck, he could drown on his own spit. Then what? Tackled to hard? They were to abusive with stopping the idiot?
All this talk of leathal tasers is nonsense. Taking a drink of water is possibly lethal. There will always be an exception, thats life- nothing is fool-proof- nothing. Like i said, you could choke on your own spit and die. Then i guess the morons supporting this idiot would sue God or some nonsense.
If he would have stopped when they told him, he wouldnt have been tasered. End of story. He chose to ignore them, he chose to be tasered. And dont give me the harmless prank thing. Because if they would have said "its a harmless prank" and the guy attacked/hurt/killed a player - then you would be complaining that not enough was done to protect the players.
Cant win with some people, they apparently know everything and cant be pleased.
Are you kidding me? Now you are saying the players should have helped get the guy? I can't understand your mindset.
Players are required to stay clear. Again, for safety. At the end of my high school is when I could run the fastest. You couldn't catch this kid unless you could out sprint him because the field has so much room to move.
Let me know where you work, so I can burst through the doors and run around your work area wooing and waving my shirt and if you call the police, I'll just keep running around evading them for a bit.
Trespassing is trespassing Derek. You can word it anyway you want, but you break the law, and you continue breaking it, you need to be subdued. And they shouldn't HAVE to run after him that long. There is no timetable when a cop must give up and say 'ehh, I guess I'll warn him with my stungun'. HE NEEDS TO BE STOPPED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. A couple of dodges here and there, then he needs to be taken down quickly.
First off... not a sissy over here. Just someone who can form a sentence without personally attacking someone to get my point across. Watch the video... he was a KID (and not a big one at that).
Sure actions have consequences, but they also dictate the severity of the consequence. Sorry if that is too much for your level of understanding. If you (unarmed) shoplift a candybar, you don't get shot by the police when they respond. A taser is not a consequence, it is a weapon.
Getting arrested is a consequence. Getting tased is the application of a weapon that is not part of a punishment. Geez.
Tasing has too much potential to kill to use as a first resort weapon. The cop could have caught the kid. Watch the video.
Are you kidding me? Now you are saying the players should have helped get the guy? I can't understand your mindset.
Players are required to stay clear. Again, for safety. At the end of my high school is when I could run the fastest. You couldn't catch this kid unless you could out sprint him because the field has so much room to move.

He was a small kid.
They didn't chase him for 10 seconds.
He was surrounded by field security, and they look pretty fit.
No one tried to tackle him. The cop, who was too fat to perform his duty, decided to take a potentially lethal option.
Oh, and GETTING ARRESTED IS THE CONSEQUENCE FOR JUMPING ON THE FIELD ... NOT GETTING TASED.
Are you folks really too dense to understand what the consequence is here? Its not the tasing, its the arrest and charges. A kid shouldn't be electrically shocked for trespassing - plain and simply. The cop could have grabbed and held him, no problem.
Anyone who thinks that tasing was the consequence needs to head back to kindergarden. The arrest was the consequence - the tasing, completely unneccesary.
No one tried to tackle him. The cop, who was too fat to perform his duty, decided to take a potentially lethal option.
Oh, and GETTING ARRESTED IS THE CONSEQUENCE FOR JUMPING ON THE FIELD ... NOT GETTING TASED.
I'm sorry, but find me a video that shows from the start when he jumps over. People who attended the game had said he ran around for a good while before what the footage shows. So you want to talk about researching yet don't choose to yourself.
Nobody tried to tackle him because they couldn't catch him, duh.
Yes, getting arrested is the consequence for jumping on the field, but guess what? Getting tazed is the consequence for evading law enforcement. Once again, duh.
Derek you still havent answered the other issue. What happens if they tackle him and his head slams the ground wrong, or breaks an arm etc. Then what? Then the stadium/cops get sued for brutality. Your trying to argue logic - but there isnt any here to argue. With everyone from the capitol down NEEDING someone to blame for every little thing - how could you not taser the kid? You could potentially kill him by tackling him, then the security gets sued. He could have lept to the field and broke his neck, then the stadium gets sued. What your basically asking is to stop the kid, but in no way shape or form have any possibility to harm him. What do you propose they do?
Any time a fan runs on the field there is a chance of someone getting hurt. Additionally, as others have pointed out, get tackled can cause serious injury and even death. So, I can't see why the conversation is on why they tasered the idiot and not on why they haven't tasered these types sooner. Remember the son & dad in Chicago who jumped out of the stands and started beating on an umpire (or was it the first base coach?). Was that all in fun? Do you think those boys would have benefited from a few thousand volts?
Not smart enough to obey the law or getting stunned.
No one tried to tackle him. The cop, who was too fat to perform his duty, decided to take a potentially lethal option.
You stated that the kid wasn't "... he was a KID (and not a big one at that)." and then
No one tried to tackle him. The cop, who was too fat to perform his duty, decided to take a potentially lethal option.
Have you ever play football? If this kid wasn't "a big one" and the security tackle him, there is a great risk of injury to this kid. Heck, we just had a high school (same age as this kid) die from playing football here.
You consistently state the taser shouldn't have been use but stipulate no solution. So we should all have waited for this kid to run out of steam or climbed back into the seats? The kid broke the law and cause thousands of law abiding people to waste their personal time on this idiot. Just another example of people like you who think the universe rotates around you. The "Yeah me, F U" generation/attitude.
The way people are nowadays, you never know what their motive or reason is for causing a disruption. While the event unfolds, you only have a few seconds to make a decision as to how to handle it. The security guards and cops are there for a reason, and that is to keep the fans and players safe.
If some A-Hole, douche bag, 17 year old kid is stupid enough to leap the fence and run onto the field, those in charge of everyone's safety needs to bring the situation under control as expeditiously as possible, and I think they did a good job and the right thing.
Monday Morning Quarterbacking sure is nice but in the heat of the moment there is no time to take a vote as to what to do to quell the situation. My compliments for a good Job to all who handled this problem in a very professional manner.
Bad, bad, bad idea. Tasering is non-lethal but can still cause bad injury, and doesn't fit the offense. It was a 17 year old kid running around for the hell of it. Overreaction much?
And to the guy who says it's funny... you should get tasered. Then we'll see if you're laughing.
Of course it's acceptable. Why put the security staff in jeopardy of getting injured for a drunk that couldn't care less? Zap him and I'm sure he won't cause this problem again.
Yes, it was acceptable. He was NOT tasered because he trespassed by leaping onto the field. He was tasered because he disobeyed a lawful order of a police officer to STOP and submit to arrest.
When a cop says stop, or lay on the ground, or place your hands on your head - you immediately do that and only that. You do not run away or argue - you follow instructions (even if you have never followed instructions before, even if you are intoxicated, even if you are a minor, a legislator, a cop, or a PhD.)
When an officer of the law takes action (according to procedures) to stop a person who is fleeing a lawful order, that is justified. If there is an argument over the lawfulness or appropriateness of the order, the jurisdiction of the officer, or any other legal issue, submit to arrest, then go to court and hash it out. That is the legal and safe way to resolve it, not fleeing from the police.
There has to be some incentive for fans to put up with these clowns......and it should also serve as a negative incentive to the law breakers...ZAp the idiots!!
Would of loved seeing him running from security yelling, "Don't taze me bro, don't taze me!!" Don't want to be shock-dropped then stay in your seat. (o_O)
I am a Phillies fan although I don't live in Philadelphia. I do, however, live in Pennsylvania. I especially like this group of players who seem to like and respect each other. Although Philly fans get a bad rap by the media, they are loyal and they support their team unlike the empty stands of the Marlins and other baseball teams. However, I believe that tasering is undue force. There are alot of young people out there and even some not so young people with undiagnosed health issues which could be compromised or even prove fatal for the person being tasered. There should be enough security in Citizens Bank Park to be able to stop one person w/o this procedure; unless of course the security force is all overweight and out of shape. The Phillies don' need a lawsuit. They need their money to ensure Jason Wirth & Jimmy Rollins remain in Philly. Oh, yes, they need the money also to get Cliff Lee back before it's too late. The one really bad decision RA has made.
If someone has a condition that could cause them to die if they're tased, they shouldn't be running out on the field in the first place. Stop making excuses for these idiots.
Hey SL...Do you remember the 2 fans that jumped on a field and beat up a 1B Coach?? So, no it isn't undue force when you don't know WTF someone wants when they jump on the field. This is NOONE'S fault but the kid's...And if they would have tackled him and hurt him, you'd be bitc*ing that they shouldn't have hurt him....
So next time we should just stop and ask him if he's a healthy young lad?? If he's running around a ball field he's healthy enough to get his ass tazed.....
I agree with Rob, he's healthy enough to jump a railing and run from security, then he's healthy enough to be tazed. I mean really, getting tackled can also cause substantial injury to the spine, internal organs, etc. I'm sick and tired of idiots complaining because they have to suffer consequences. And why didn't the father say, NO when he was asked, instead of saying "it's not a good idea". If it was my kid, I'd tell him if he does, he loses use of the car, gets grounded etc.
Yes there are alot of people out there with undiagnosed health issues, including mental health issues. The officers have no idea what the intention of someone running on the field is and they have to be prepared for the worst. Also, have you ever tackled anybody? It's a violent collision for both parties involved and I don't think that the officers should have to risk a physical injury when they have an alternative.
Philly phans get the reputation they deserve. I personally know people who attended the World Series in 2008 that were attacked in the restroom and had to have police escorts in and out of the stadium. When the incidents were reported to the police, they were told "this is what we do in Philly". I believe that young man should not have been on the field. He knew it. His father knew it. The fans knew it. Keep your butt in your seat. He got what he deserved! If he was thinking of any "undiagnosed health issue", he should not have run on the field.
Plain and simple - he was breaking the law. He got what he deserved!
Tasering can be lethal to a young fit male. Its nothing about your physiology that makes it possibly lethal (by default. ..Sure a heart condition doesn't help things).
Mainly... and you geniuses should look this up... fibrillation is what you are concerned about. Anytime your heart receives pulses of electricity it can go into arrythmia - an out of step rythm - that leads to cardiac arrest. By the nature that he is healthy, and would not have a pacemaker to fix the arrythmia ... he very well could die.
Unless he is actually posing a risk (attempting to attack someone, etc), tasering is too much.
Are we really so weak and scared that we have to result to possibly killing a young boy who acted the way young boys normally do. Really?
Poor Derek the worry wart. YOU again miss the point. Do not run onto field. You will be tazed if you do. Its sort of like, do not hit yourself in the head with a hammer. You will hurt yourself if you do.
"Are we really so weak and scared that we have to result to possibly killing a young boy who acted the way young boys normally do. Really?"
I would say no with using common sense, but this country has lost that with people suing everyone over every little thing - so i have to ignore common sense and say yes. You have to cover your butt because you WILL get sued, its not even an if. So i say yes, we do have to risk possibly killing a young boy who in the act of stupidity could possibly kill someone on the field.
Hey Derek running into traffic can be lethal to a young fit male. Its nothing about your physiology that makes it possibly lethal it's the car that runs over you(by default. ..Sure a heart condition doesn't help things).
I'll ask this question again...Did you hear about the two guys that jumped onto a field and beat the crap out a 1B coach?? No?/ Then google it...Yes then shut your hole....
people like you yourself keep saying that some people have heart conditions... true, but if you have a condition that would kill you if you eat butter and you go to a restaurant that uses butter is that their fault? no. it's your because you knew of the possible consequences and did nothing to prevent it. ... what do you suggest? that every time the cops need to subdue someone they first ask them if they have any allergies or medical conditions that might cause them harm before they react? that's how innocent people die. ... again if someone was hurt by this "harmless" kid, you'd be all over this cop for being to fat to catch the kid and protect the players on the field. give it up. whether it was too much force or not is easy to say in hindsight, but not reacting to a situation before it turns to a violent or dangerous one is how we lost the trade center towers. trespassing is illegal and in most states lethal force is allowed to ensure safety. he's lucky they didn't shoot him in leg... that would be non-lethal... he has more chance of dying from a stun gun to the head then a bullet to the leg right? ... your one of those people who are just against the police and anyone else with authority. the comparisons i'm seeing are absurd for one. secondly, not a one of you defenders of the idiots will even acknowledge that people have gotten physically assaulted and even stabbed from "harmless" fans pulling "stupid pranks". someone even suggested that he might have had epilepsy and couldn't respond to the cops. how many people do you know that have seizures that cause them to run around and make cuts like they're trying out for the Pats at the NFL rookie combine? Get real!!! It will take a player to get killed or someone to set off a bomb and kill a bunch of fans for idiots like you guys to realize that when there is a possible dangerous situation reaction is necessary to ensure the law-abiding fans who paid money to sit comfortably and enjoy a game are safe. if someone did this in your place of work i'm sure the reaction would be the same. why should this kid get a break because he was at a baseball game? if anything he should get it worse. he put everyone in that stadium in harms way. what if he was a distraction so someone else could set off a bomb in another part of the stadium while everyone else's attention was on the moron on the field? You just don't know and i'm sure the kid didn't tell the cop before he ran on the field that he didn't have a concealed weapon and that he was just gonna run around until he got tired so his friends would think he was cool. I wish someone would sue you for being an idiot. i'm just glad that you people aren't in positions of power in this country. i would fear for my safety since you don't think the cops should react until someone gets hurt. btw... the police's job is to serve and protect. this guy was protecting everyone in that stadium. what is more important, the thousands of people in the stands following the letter of the law or the well being of a criminal? that is what he is. trespassing, resisting arrested, evading law enforcement. you guys need to grow up and realize this is a dangerous world we live in and i for one don't want the police to wait and see if someone has bad intentions before they stop them from continuing their illegal activities. imagine if the police didnt react to the bomb in the SUV in Times Square because it was only double parked and thats not a violent crime. Thousands of people would be dead. ... and you would STILL blame the police. like i said earlier, i hope next time they shoot the kid in the leg so people can't complain that 27% of the time people die from being tasered, but this is usually because of an existing condition or because they were on cocaine, which causes the risk of death to jump to 50%. I don't think anyone to date has died from the cops shooting them in the leg to subdue them... why don't you guys do a little research yourselves?
You know he's gonna file a lawsuit and make the morning talk show rounds...
You're probably right smallbusinessforMcCain. And he'll expose his idiocy to a National audience too, far beyond the damage that his reputation has already suffered. Just what anyone of the rest of us would do......not. His mom and dad must be thrilled! He'll always be remembered as that Moron who ran onto the field and was Tasered. Imbecile. No court in their right mind would give the idiot a nickle.
First... This isn't vietnam. Young boys at baseball games have never posed a terrorist threat, much less carrying grenades.
Secondly, what you are advocating is that we treat all 12 and ups with possibly lethal force, even if they are not being violent - on the auspice that they may have a 'grenade'.
If spectators are now deemed a terrorist threat to the players, why not put up chicken wire and fences like they do in other parts of the world for soccer? I believe even basketball, baseball, and football in America had these measures in places once upon a time. I don't think anyone has ever really thought any of these idiots that run on the field as legitimate threats (that dude in Kansas City withstanding). I think the police and security are just tired of looking like the keystone cops chasing these guys around. 99% of these guards/cops are fat slobs who can't run and keep up with these young idiots. Easier to just shoot spectators. Tackling seems to have been the safest, more proven method to date. It's scary when the police and security guards are more of a hazard than the general public. Sociopaths.
I say taser them. They would get no less than that if they were to trespass on my property. Chasing and tackling would not be options I would consider when protecting my family.
of course it's correct to taze him. Won't do it again. If only his parents had taught him and gave him a proper upbringing. (Bet we see the parents sueing though.)
Let's put this in perspective. This kid violated a trespassing law...so if YOU happen to trespass on private property then a cop has the right to tase you if he/she THINKS you are a threat to someone? The kid gave no reason to assume he posed a threat. People have been running out onto sports fields since the beginning of time...when has there ever been one incident when that action caused a threat to anyone? Where is the basis behind the assumption of him being a threat? There was no precedence, or behavior displayed, to justify using deadly (yes, taser can kill) force in this situation. The cop was wrong and should be punished.
Not too long ago there was an incident where two people (father and son)went on the field and brutally attacked a base coach, so yes, there is a basis for the assumption of treat. Great decision by the cop.
Nine people have died while running the London marathon, so running can indeed be a lethal activity. The officer might have very well saved that boys life!
how about the tennis player that was stabbed when a fan jumped onto the court, ya think she would agree to the idiot having been tasered before she was injured.
Did any of you watch this? There was NO attempt to attack anyone...he wasn't even running towards anyone. There was no behavior that deserved this boy to be tasered...period, end of story. Again, YOU ALL be careful the next time you step on private property or J-walk...a cop might assume you have intent to harm someone and taser you...do you want to live in that kind of world? I don't!
I didn't want to go the route of putting the cop down, but the real truth of the matter is the cop was too out of shape to catch the kid so instead of looking foolish in front of 40K+ people, he resorted to undue force. It was a bad call and we need to look at how we train police officers...physically and mentally.
Uncalled for violence...just like the off duty cop who shot and killed a kid just the other day right in Philly for getting water on his girlfriend's cell phone...the police force is out of hand...you can't deny that!
Mythoughts--sorry comments. You must be an ex-con or relative of one. Your thinking has allowed far to many jerks to continue their illegal antics. Oh, the poor baby wasn't violent. Phooey! The tazer was just fine.
mythoughts-1792887...I'm not going to dispute that there are some bad apples in the police force as their are in any profession, but before you start criticizing cops in general, why don't you go walk a mile in their shoes. You say there was no attempt to attack anyone, but unless you can see into the future, you don't know what his motive or plan was. A cop never knows what is going to happen, so you neutralize the threat before they can attack. Most suicide bombers look like they aren't going to do anything either until after they blow up along with a bunch of innocent bystanders. Then it is too late. And it is not just that he "stepped" on private property, it is that he attempted to flee from law enforcement and accept the consequences for his action.
Getting arrested is the consequence for jumping on the field, but getting tazed is the consequence for evading law enforcement. People are trying to say he shouldn't have gotten tazed for trespassing when the running from the cops after warning is what got him tazed.
So by all of your comments above, anyone doing anything could potentially be out to harm someone and deserves to be injured? That's crazy. And, there's no need to insult me by saying I must be a criminal myself. I've never been arrested or intentionally hurt anyone in my life. I wasn't insulting anyone here, just voicing my opinion. The facts are cops are out there injuring and killing innocent people for unjust reasons...you can't deny that. Something is wrong with that....and it should be addressed. Violence is not the answer to all questions...cops need to learn how to properly access a situation.
mythoughts the answer to your question is yes.....Anyone doing anything COULD potentially be out to harm you.....And how do you know he wasn't out to hurt anyone?? You don't know until you catch him and question him.....Should they have just waited to find out?? Then you'd be complaining that they let him run and he ended up hurting someone and, doggonit, why didn't they catch him earlier....
And think about how many Police Officers there are in the US....About as many as a very large city...And you show me a very large city that doesn't have bad apples..The Police Forces of the US aren't immune to bad people...
Just like baseball fields aren't immune to idiots running around.....
If a person steps onto the playing field, he deserves whatever happens to him. Tazering is better than being shot. Anybody who is opposed to this needs to think about what they would want done if somw drunk idiot decided to break into their office and run around while they are at work. The playing field is the work area of the pro athletes.
He posed no threat. All threats must be evaluated.
This kid was not drunk.
He was not a big kid, could easily be handled by security without weapons.
Did not threaten, attack, or otherwise cause violence.
Tasering can very well be lethal to a healthy human.
Police and Security, regardless of the situation, should always use the least amount of force possible. More than what is NECESSARY is called excessive.
Did they physically tackle him and that not work? Use your nightstick. Did your nightstick not work? Use two...etc
A whole lot should go into subduing a non-violent field running before shooting them with fifty thousand volts, possibly causing arrythmia and death, is even close to an option.
A baseball field, no matter where or in what auspices, is no 'office'. Just because you get paid to play a game does not mean your are 'working'. It means you are 'playing' and getting 'paid'. Even in an office, if someone came running through, and wasn't being violent - I would remove them from the office if they didn't decide to run out on their own. I certainly wouldn't shoot or tase them.
Derek....If you get paid to do something it is a job.....Use your nightstick?? Ever been hit by one of those?? How about in the head?? Swung correctly it can do some damage...And if that happened you'd be here crying about how mean the Police were....And since when do you have to be "big" to hurt someone?? Where is the accountability of this idiot?? You'd probably cheer him if you would have been there...
I mean really "Hey daddy can I jump the wall, trespass, interrupt the game just to get on TV"? "Well son I don't think that'd be too good of an idea". "Ok Dad I'll see you at the jail"!
And if someone came into your office I'm sure you'd be one of the first under your desk hoping someone ELSE would deal with the matter.
All you are doing is making excuses for this idiot...But hey birds of a feather.....
Tasering is a reasonable non-lethal means to control a situation - and its FUNNY!
Maybe to you it's funny. I am curious how you would react.
wjb376 - if you got tasered, I'd laugh.
Tasering is FUNNY????? I hope you get tasered someday and see how it feels!!!
The officer did the right thing. In today's world you do not know what his intentions were. The players have the right to be protected!
Save tasers for true emergencies, not for ball park crowd amusements.
essie...come on seeing that kid flopping on the ground was hilarious....I dont care where your from...that sh-t is funny...
Here is the link to the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqtPUhYdz6M
Not only funny, but hilarious. You can choose your actions but you cant always choose the consequences. Maybe he should have listened to his Dad when he called him to ask permission.
Don't run onto the field = don't get tasered. Easy.
I vote to tase Ken...
They gave him a chance to stop. He didn't YOU LOSE.
WJB376: I have been tased as part of my job training and i felt ELECTRIFIED!!
So you say this is non-lethal, how many people have died in the past year from tasers? Would you like to try it?
How funny would that be to see someone twitch to their death in center field?
Remember the first base coach that was attacked a few years ago!? Who knows how drunk these idiots are, go ahead taser them they have it coming.
Lesson learned: Keep your a$$ off the field.
Still, if they do it enough times, it will deter others from trying it.
Tasering...the new national passtime...I would pay to watch;-)
This is totally out of control police mentality. Taz the damn cops!!!!
Snake;
you are absolutely right! we should either;
A) allow people to do WHATEVER they want, and ignore the laws,
or
B) Shoot them, right in the ass, on TV.
given the options, taser is MUCH safer than the options.
And, BTW, it is HYSTERICAL. don't wanna get shocked? follow the law. THERE'S a thought....
And they wouldn't be doing anything to warrant being zapped, either.
Why is it that these fools think it is A OK to march onto other people's property - especially when they are using it?
People are getting such a sense of self-importance.
There is no reason that anyone needs to be on the field except the players and the authorized individuals involved in the game. That's it.
Grow up America. Stop the sophomoric behavior.
I love this idea.
Derek.hinch:
It was hyperbole.
Doesn't matter, they didn't perform due dilligence in using everything but possibly lethal force. Police have alot of tools to control a situation. Depending on whether violence is present, they are restricted in their use.
There is a type of security that you won't get sued for. Its called "Not using possibly lethal force against a non-violent perpertrator".
No matter if what he did was wrong... tasing is a stretch. Did they try everything else first? Nope.
"Did they try everything else first? Nope."
Being in the majority certainly doesn't make you right. I can list alot of societies where the majority was in the wrong, with detrimental consequences. Don't fool yourself on that one. Being in the minority is sometimes the best place to be. Legally, I am in the right - FYI.
Getting hit with 50,000 volts of electricity is MUCH more dangerous than getting taken to the ground physically.
Your heart + unintended high voltage electricity = fibrillation from arrythmia = Cardiac Arrest. Thats a dangerous bet to take.
To those that are commenting... watch it here... they could have tackled this kid no problem. The cop was just too fat.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqtPUhYdz6M
With all of those Athletes!?

They don't hit you with 50,000 volts. They are more like 20,000.
But it doesn't matter once again.
Defiant trespass, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest equals something bad about to happen for you.
Common sense. The kid wanted a once in a lifetime experience, he ended up getting two.
Adam-1755069
Each tasing cartridge is 50k. Its also modulated at high frequency.
www.taser.com
If he hits you with the base of the weapon its 100k. Research it before you assert it.
They didn't chase him for 10 seconds.
You stated that the kid wasn't "... he was a KID (and not a big one at that)." and then
Have you ever play football? If this kid wasn't "a big one" and the security tackle him, there is a great risk of injury to this kid. Heck, we just had a high school (same age as this kid) die from playing football here.
You consistently state the taser shouldn't have been use but stipulate no solution. So we should all have waited for this kid to run out of steam or climbed back into the seats? The kid broke the law and cause thousands of law abiding people to waste their personal time on this idiot. Just another example of people like you who think the universe rotates around you. The "Yeah me, F U" generation/attitude.
I'd like to be on that jury, if he sues. He won't get a dime...
Really?
Hitch, where did you go to law school? Have chased his ambulance yet? Where can I file the bar complaint?
They didn't chase him for 10 seconds.
No one tried to tackle him. The cop, who was too fat to perform his duty, decided to take a potentially lethal option.
Oh, and GETTING ARRESTED IS THE CONSEQUENCE FOR JUMPING ON THE FIELD ... NOT GETTING TASED.

Nobody tried to tackle him because they couldn't catch him, duh.
Yes, getting arrested is the consequence for jumping on the field, but guess what? Getting tazed is the consequence for evading law enforcement. Once again, duh.
It's not only acceptable, it's entertainment for the other fans! If you're stupid enough to run onto the field, you deserve to get Tasered.
You know he's gonna file a lawsuit and make the morning talk show rounds.
That' sick.
Not if his dad beats the crap out if him for pulling such a stupid stunt and now putting the family name in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
Minimally acceptable - they should shoot! Highly effective in sending a lesson.....
Good Okie attitude, shoot first ask questions later. You must work for OHP.
Electrocution is declared cruel and unusual punishment for executions, but it's perfectly legal to bring down stupid kids at ballgames?
it was declared cruel and unusual...because IT IS cruel and unusual to die from electrocution.... which is used as a form of "death Penalty".....
no one would die from taze unless, as the other post noted, you have some sort of undiagnosed health issues....
I say make examples of a cpl of punks, before someone on the field or the stands get hurt.
whats cruel and unusual is the stuff people do to get the electric chair.
I'm all for them zapping him. They didnt even show it on tv, so that was disappointing. Ryan Howard looked amused.
Mo813
You don't have to have a pre-existing condition. Tasering can cause arrythmia and send your heart into fibrillation.
Taser is NOT non-lethal. It is a 'less than lethal' option, but can be lethal to a normal healthy human being.
Are we really that scare of a teenager? Really?
Are you kidding me, in Nam, 12 year olds walked up to groups of soldiers with grenades. Kids can be dangerous also.
MassiveDynamic
First... This isn't vietnam. Young boys at baseball games have never posed a terrorist threat, much less carrying grenades.
Secondly, what you are advocating is that we treat all 12 and ups with possibly lethal force, even if they are not being violent - on the auspice that they may have a 'grenade'.
Thats moronic.
no its not Nam its Philly, thats worse.
Hey Hinch,
30 years ago young boys had never posed a terrorist threat at school, but now we have school shootings.
So just because something has not happen in the past at a baseball game, does not mean it could not happen now.
Bottom line, he broke the law, and got what he deserved.
The stadium is private property, if an intruder were at my home they would be lucky to be tazed and not shot.
It's much better then being shot. Idiot had it coming.
Phillies and Yankees fans for sure it's ok to tazer......
of course it's correct to taze him. Won't do it again. If only his parents had taught him and gave him a proper upbringing. (Bet we see the parents sueing though.)
I say put signs up around the park - "You jump the fence, we'll taze you bro"
Great decision by the cop.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/09/21/national/main522857.shtml
Yes protectthekids, I agree.
Forget the taser, have them use their handguns!
If a person steps onto the playing field, he deserves whatever happens to him. Tazering is better than being shot. Anybody who is opposed to this needs to think about what they would want done if somw drunk idiot decided to break into their office and run around while they are at work. The playing field is the work area of the pro athletes.
that is why you need http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzToNo7A-94
That's right terry tate, office linebacker!!
Amen!
I think that it's fine. Might make other fans lees likely to do the same thing in the future. Besides, who knows what the guys motive is.
Allen, who said the kid was drunk?
