When the ref calls a foul and then won't tell anyone what the foul was, you just have to be suspicious. I've never seen a ref in any sport fail to say what foul he called--he might later say he was wrong but he doesn't fail to state what he thought the foul was.
The very few "no" posts here have no explanations.
I wonder if the ref is the one doing this?
There was no foul. If anything, the other team was fouling in the box.
What I suspect happened is the ref called a foul to give the free kick and wanted to negate it after he realised it was a no call.
Still no excuse to negate a point. The USA has been robbed but in the end it shouldnt matter. Win the next game and put the issue to rest.
Should have had a Ref who at least speaks the Universal language of English for a US match. Very poor Ref and very poor communication. FIFA should be more considerate of who is playing.
Universal Language of English? Leave it to a Texan to not understand the size of the universe. English has historically been the language of business, but hardly the language of the universe. You must have watched too much He-man in your youth. But it is very Texas of you to think that the whole world should speak your language. How about this, when the US consistently wins the world cup maybe then you have a case, but that is not looming over the horizon. The call was a bad one, but sport is the universal language and it does not need to be translated into texan.
As for FIFA being more considerate of who is playing... I have not yet met a considerate texan. Big trucks, little nuts. that pretty much sums up texas.
Well said. I am an American living overseas and I see all too often how some Americans tend to view our country as the center of the universe, which is one of the reasons I think some people have a problem with us. But I digress from the main point of these posts, I do believe we were robbed of that last goal and I think that the Slovenians were playing dirty and finally the ref started issuing yellow cards in e second half. The US still needs to step up their game. Even though they have more points this world cup compared to the last one, I believe they played an excellent game against Italy in Kaiserslautern in 2006, they weren't robbed that time. I could tell the team was getting very pissed off from all the fouls and I was too. Well, they can make up for it on Wednesday, and they'd better!
The ref blamed it on the vuvuzelas breaking his concentration. Seriously though, I guess we have to live by it like the young pitcher who lost the perfect game in MLB because of a bad call.
Obviously the ref didnt want the U.S. to win. But what can anybody do about it.
What we can do about it is vote with our TV tuners. I was really getting excited about soccer, but now that I see that political and possibly religious bias can enter the officiating, my interest is gone. I will not watch another match. If the viewers quit watching, then AT&T stops sponsoring, and FIFA must pay the price for their lack of fair play...
Buddy dont give up on soccer because of one Douche Bag, If you just started getting into soccer keep watching. What you should see is YES the USA got screwed but if they knew how to play good soccer in the first place the referee would of not have been able to affect that game. Watch Argentina, Brazil, and Spain play and then you can see how soccer should be played. The USA is still developing and hopefully they pull through, look at it as you just saw the most controversial call of the 2010 World Cup probably, Its sad it was the US that had it happen to but if something makes you angry it means it affected you
Everyone say the play to me it was a valid point. This is were the govern body should step in and review if necessary then do what is right. That is a part of their job (even though they never do) is it not.
The pitcher with the perfect game should have that ref over ruled also and get his perfect game on record. When a bad call in any sport affect something as important as a win or lose or a perfect game, it needs to be corrected.
Let's replay the whole game, and while we're at it, have the 86 England-Argentina match replayed, and the 72 Olympic men's basketball final played over as well. Crappy call, but at least it gave that center of football, Mali, its 7.5 minutes of fame
bad calls are part of every game but a team should not really on not getting bad calls to win..US team is better then the way their playing they need to step it up! oh and viva Mexico!! beautiful performance against France this is our year!!
Great game..Go USA.... Let them do what they will. By the way WE played last game WE never quit. I think Algeria has their hands full. I hope the people of the world see how much class we have and how we lead by example. Let the people who are afraid of what we can do say what they want. Play on and suck it up, and stop being Mexican if you live here in the states or you'll never understand...U.S.A..
I blame FIFA. This Mali ref was clearly overwhelmed and incompetent. Being politically correct and choosing him because he is from Africa is not enough. He made numerous bad calls, including giving Findlay the phantom handcall penalty when the ball first hit him in the face (and now with the yellow card Findlay cannot play). Why doesn't FIFA join the 21st Century and adopt instant replay for disallowed goals? The stakes are too high in the World Cup for incompetent and biased refs to have any role and not to use instant replay. Also the FIFA rule that a ref does not have to identify who the foul was on and identify the infraction is not worthy of a world athletic competition. Finally, I hate to say it, but am surprised no one has mentioned that Islam is the dominant religion in Mali. I hope that that was not the source of bias and that he was simply overwhelmed and incompetent.
FIFA, needs to get their act togothor and show some respect for how technology or a review and appeals process can correct horrendous officiating errors.
There is not that many but when it comes down to key plays like this one or IRELAND or whatever, lets use the other officials, tehcnology and governing bodies to get it right.
The Baseball perfect game was a great example. The commish should have stepped in on that. Atleast the ref apologized. Thats a ref that should be allowed to play again. Man up and own your mistakes.
Fire this other official. He doesnt dare say a word because it was a bad call with no explanation.
If the referee had not blown the whistle (he had done so even before the ball connect with Edu's boot), he would have allowed a goal to be scored by way of an infringement. As it turned out, he did blew the whistle -- this is exactly why he was there for.
The referee has done his job; dare we demand any less from him?
Without a doubt.... I've seen better eyes on a potato... nothing short of robbery... Whether it is or not, these guys have fought all the odds and done so with little national support... they deserve the best! I hope their success sparks some interest in football in the US!

It appeared from very early in the game that the refs didn't want the USA to win.
