I'm a yankee and I worked in Charlotte for 10 months. Everyone was always nice. Half of Charlotte transplanted from the Bay Area when BofA moved.

I have too agree with you, it was a palin stupid article. I expected more and got less I am also shocked to see New York in the top, thats tells me for sure that someone did not do their homework.

They should have visited Houston Texas., the drivers there have a death wish and the people are very, very rude. the driving there is very, very dangerous.

Its as if they do not have the income for too pay their traffic officer, there were some really bad things going on there on their freeways and highways inside and out side of Houston, maybe the body count is not high enough for them too take the speeders and non-signaling lane changers and talk about being cut off...Go too Houston and experience the death defying driving.

You are absolutely right about Houston. Lived in New York most of my life and only moved to Houston about 7 years ago. New York gets a bad rap. All you have to do is look back at how we responded to the disaster of 9-11 to know that New Yorkers are NOT the rude folks others claim we are. It's just that we are very busy and have things to do and places to get to; it's a fast pace. We can only hold that door for you for just so long, and if you are going to take too much time to move, well then you are on your own because we don't have all day. As for Houston and their drivers? They have to be the absolute rudest and most inconsiderate drivers in the world! Have an emergency? Need to use the passing lane? Forget about it here in Houston. People here think the passing lane has their name on it and they won't move over for anything. If you try to pass on the inside, they speed up to prevent you from passing them! How's that for courtesy? No such thing as southern hospitality down here!

LA by far. That scene in Swingers when Mikey introduces himself at a party to a woman and she asks "What car do you drive?" basically sums up the women in the lower half of the state.

But being from Philly, I have to admit, Philadelphians, New Jerseyites, and New Yorkers are pretty rude to people. It's just the culture you grow up in, there's more con artists, crooks, and overall @ssholes then some of these southern towns. But in our defense, some people take us as "being rude" when it's really how we talk, and have no ill will.

Everyone I ever met from Texas was looking for a fight. I've never been to Texas but I hope not everyone has a chip on their shoulder down there. Yikes!

New Yorkers aren't rude they just take pride in independence. Southerners are nice, but for once I really just want to walk into a store without a clerk bending over backwards to help me find something. In most Home Depots around the country you can't find an employee, but in NC you can't get rid of them! I know it's just the Southern kindness, but can I please have a go at it myself before you offer to do my shopping for me? I guess that's just the New Yorker in me!

New Yorkers drive fast too, but we also check over our shoulders, use turn signals, understand who has the right of way at a stop sign, never come to a complete stop on a highway off ramp for no reason, and know that a quarter inch of snow isn't an excuse to close the only highway to and from town! lol Driving there is about efficiency. Other parts of the country - who knows!

CA is OK, but the closer I got to LA the flakier and more inexplicable people became. Real fake scene in LA.

Most large cities have rude people that don't want to get invovled with you. They are stressed out about work, traffic jams, tail gaters on the freeway, and criminals. I was in the Air Force with people from all over and on a personal level most are OK, but you get a million people on the side walks, in the stores, and on the freeways and the tension levels go up, doesn't matter if it Houston, Dallas, or San Franciso.

I also learned that people up north think they know how to drive in the ice and snow. They don't. They have equipment to clean the roads and the cities down south only have limited amount of ice and snow removal equipment. I have cable TV and get nation news and I see all those cars in New York and Chicago piled up in multiple care wrecks at the intersections and the cars stuck on the freeways sin the blizzards, and people complaining about the snow not getting removed in a timely manner. You people can't drive in that mess any better than anyone else.

The problem with LA is all of the wannabe cool people who transplanted from elsewhere. Californians aren't rude. Most of these movie stars and ridiculous people that you see on reality tv grew up somewhere else and they have something to prove.

DC is a different lot, but the same issue. These rude people aren't from DC. Philly, Boston, Memphis, etc... Those cities are truly rude. People are born and raised there.

To Steve Greer; I had a friend of mine up from Florida right after 9-11 and we went to a pizza joint on Long Island in Merrick. Pizza guy chatted us up like we were old friends. My friend was shocked. He couldn't figure out why this guy was so friendly. I said "give it another year. we'll come back and all will be forgotten and he will be the @!$%# he usually is." So we go back a year later and sure nuff - not only did he not remember us, he treated us like @!$%#.

The south in general is rude, they are nice to your face and talk about you when you walk away. Very paranoid and distrustful of outsiders. Still LA wins for rudest city. For example, I was at a take out place and when the person asked this woman for her order she put up her window because she was on the phone. Huge line of cars behind her. I would never want to work in the service industry in LA, people are just awful.

Quite honestly, I think all of these places are rude in their own ways. I haven't been to a lot of these places on the list, but I do know by summing up most of the comments.

LA is apparently rude in the "I'm too good for you" way.

D.C. is apparently rude in the "I need to get to the top, get out of my way" kind of way.

NYC is apparently rude in the "I'm in a rush" and/or "I'm going to either con or mug you...or both" way.

Dallas, where I have been for most of my life so far, is rude mainly because it is filled with wannabe "gangstas", hicks, and, of course, snobby, prejudiced bible thumpers. (I am not trying to take this to religion or anything...I am christian myself, I am just saying...people in Dallas take the Bible to a whole new level of crazy/obsessive that you don't even see on Fox News.)

Point is, every place is rude in their own way. Every place will have someone complaining about rudeness...This isn't a winnable argument.

I'm originally from Mississippi, and last time I was there I did not think people in Manhattan were rude at all, though they did honk a lot! People seem much ruder where I live in FL (not all of FL); after I had lived here only a few months some guy T-boned a friend's car (she was hugely pregnant) then when the cops got there he actually lied to the cops, saying she hit him! Even though I'd been away from MS for years, I was shocked out of my mind! Fortunately, the way the cars were smashed it was pretty obvious what happened so the cop came over to me rolling his eyes and said, "What REALLY happened?" Unfortunately, my friend was sent into early labor by the accident and had to go on bedrest. At my job I've been screamed at and personally insulted for no reason, I had one patient literally write her congressman with a bunch of lies and half-truths presumably to get out of paying her bill, and I had another patient threaten to get me fired for no reason-none of it worked, of course, because the cases were documented and well known to my boss.

Now I'm pretty used to it here. I have to adjust MYSELF now when I visit the real South lest I run over people in a department store as I rush and hear them behind me saying politely, "Excuse me," "Excuse me," when it's really MY fault. (I'm better, I can switch worlds seamlessly now.)

I think some perceptions are based on what part of the city you were exposed to. When I was in Houston, the people I visited-my cousins-were in drug rehab; so that's what I saw in Houston. Of course, the recovering addicts were not rude at all-just scary to me, as I was pretty young and had never seen people with tracks on their arms.

I worked in Atlanta one summer, and I did see plenty of rude people there; but many were nice, and I made some good friends. I've only seen the airport in Phoenix. Wash, DC was a cool road trip for me in college to see friends then later a romp for my daughter in all the Smithsonians (how could I not love that?) Chicago was a brief visit in winter for college auditions.

Memphis I know, though I never lived there. It's very complicated. The crime rate has been high for years, and there have been racial issues on both sides for quite a while-though not the cause of the crime. Thankfully, things do seem to be looking up in some ways, though it's hard to say. I'd say the rudeness factor would depend largely on who you were and in what part of Memphis you found yourself.

Miami, for the most part, is not my favorite city; though the University of Miami is beautiful and very much a melting pot. Wild macaws literally fly around campus! The South Beach area has some great restaurants including one of the best Cuban ones, but people don't seem to hang around a long time after dark; some of those areas get very dangerous. (SHeesh, I sound like a tourist brochure!) Anyway, it's not rudeness that bothers me, but the scary people that come out at night in parts of Miami-they just start washing your windshield and stuff; once one walked right up to my car with unknown purpose and almost fell across my hood while I was stopped at a red light trying to get out of the South Beach area. It's weird, but the air even feels heavy there.

The folks talking about the Houston driving are absolutely correct. I have to deal with these people every day to and from work. I always say, "There's a reason every car down here has a dent in it." The thing is, there's no reason for it. People think that you have to drive that way in a big city, but you don't.

I mean, I was making a left. The guy in the lane immediately to my right wanted to go left from a non-left turn lane, but didn't indicate it. He could have done a couple of things (for example, indicated to me he wanted to go in front, go down a bit and do the Texas u-turn, or even could have made the left turn and stay to the outside so I could at least see him). What did he do? No turn signal and cuts to the inside lane.

Red lights? Forget about it. They put up cameras to stop people from running them. The city voted them down. The day they took them down, I counted 17 cars blatently run a red light. If the first one through doesn't t-bone you, the other two following behind probably will.

I didn't vote Houston as high on the rudeness, though, because for every person that treats someone like crap (and I've seen it and experienced it), there is someone who is awesome to you.

Hey Jake, me and my buddy had just got done performing at the Breeders' Cup on national TV. Resturant pizza guy (owner of the store) KNEW who we were BOTH times. And Merrick is hardly one of the "most populated cities". Its a small town, by LI standards.

I think rudeness is kind of a "city thing" more than a geographic thing. I've been to many cities on this list and on the surface, many appear rude. I think it's because you don't know your neighbors and thus you are a little less open to strangers.

However when I've had the chance to visit these places for more than just a day or two, most of the people were pretty nice in all of them.

If I HAD to pick, I think Washington might be a bit worse than the rest, but only because of so much government -- which, let's face it -- is not particularly friendly!

Houston has some "rules of the road" that people from the north need to know about. Horn honking is basically an invitation to fight, and flipping someone off is the same as saying take a shot at me. In the 80's half of Michigan moved down here and things started getting bad, and when the Katrina Crime Wave came things got even worse. And then there are the illegals, thats where most of the bad driving comes from. But the red light thing someone mentioned earlier is a real problem here.

I just got back from vac in Times Square, NYC. The only rude people were the tourists. The cops, subway staff, and locals were fine.

IF you take those who grew up in the LA orange county area you wouldfind some of the nicest most genuine people on the planet. The problem is that the majority of people there are from other places and now LA and Orange county are over crowded I for one would like all these people to leave so I can go home but reality says that will never happen. L.A. in the house ! We have the coolest songs.

The only rude people I've encountered while visiting L.A. were the "West Coast Latinos", AKA Chicanos or people of Mexican descent/heritage; they treated me like dirt because I wasn't "One of them", meaning I didn't speak their use of Spanish, and/or not Mexican like them. Excuse me, I thought I lived in the USA where English is more common than Spanish. Talk about culture shock! I've received better treatment from the Latinos in NYC, especially in Manhattan's Spanish Harlem. And speaking of language--if a Latino back in NY is somewhat, or all the way fluent in English, he, or she will speak English--Not insist that you speak Spanish. I have a lot of friends in NY who are either of Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Dominican descent.

And as for San Francisco, because the city council has ordered to police to not "enforce the law" on the many aggressive, possibly drug addicted homeless panhandlers and petty thieves on the streets, because they are `special groups' who deserve special rights and/or treatment by the police, I feel safer walking in Central Park at night than walking down Powell, Market, or even California Streets in broad daylight, as well as Golden Gate Park.

The major problem with LA is that the whole metro (OC, San Bern. & riverside included) is built for cars. Everyone basically thinks of other people as other metal boxes. Also, the entertainment industry people bring down the quality of life. Any city with a strong entertainment industry is going to be more superficial.

People are basically nicer in places where they walk and deal with each other face to face. It's a lot easier to be rude to another car than another pedestrian.

LA is a crap hole all the smog gets in people minds and makes them think they are the only person existing and everyone else is a figment of their imagination, there to serve them on hands and feet. Plus they all look like plastic people with a drinking problem.

My daughter lives in Hollywood and I have to say that the people there are different to say the least.

Grew up in an area that was a tourist hot spot for NYC and Philly. I now live in one that is a tourist hot spot for LA. Worked in EMS and nursing in both. Give me the NYC any day. They may be blunt but you know where you stand. The ones from LA are beyond stuck up and rude. Not to mention the complete lack of compassion form someone else. Never had someone from NY get upset when the heart attack go treated before their finger laceration. But the ones from LA, especially the D listers ...

Very true about the "uppity" crowd in Dallas. I'll be the first to admit, my hometown is pretty darn rude toward anyone who isn't in the "in" crowd. That said, not all of us are completely mean...except in traffic. :)

In my experience Dallas is a city with a lot of people who like to walk around with their noses up in the air who think they are better than the rest of the US. I have encountered some of the loudest and rudest people in Dallas and the traffic is a nightmare in that city. However I also can not stand the rude tourists in Las Vegas and the Asian tourists are the rudest and pushiest.

I've made it over to Arlington, but not Dallas "proper."

As for the traffic comments, I will say this. I've lived near Detroit, Chicago, and Boston, and I currently live in Houston. I have never, in any time spent in these cities, seen worse drivers than I have seen in Texas. There's a reason every car seems to have a dent in it. Common sense driving methods seem to be lacking.

As for the people being rude, I have seen that, but I've also seen many people who are certainly very gracious and pleasant, as well.

I travel to Chicago several times a year and while I think the drivers there are crazy I still think they have nothing on the Texans. Also never tell anyone in Texas that you are from somewhere else because they will spend several minutes telling you how great Texas is and how bad the place you are from is. Rude!

I have to agree with all of the posters, Dallas and Houston are both very unfriendly stab you in the back cities. some of the worse drivers and people in Texas lately have come out of these two cities, the people are all extremely rude and uppity. they will smile in your face and stab you in the back. they are very rude and critical of others. They are not what they appears

Hey TonyO -- Have you ever driven in Nashville? They'll give you a license here if you can sign your name and do three turns and a stop. No English? No problem! Can't see over the dashboard? No problem! Drunk? Little problem but you can get right back on the road. Add to that half the freeway entrances are on the right side and half on the left, exits every ten miles only, etc. I should wear a helmet when I drive.

The city where I was treated most rudely was Wichita, Kansas. In fact, all through Kansas the people were either indifferent or snotty.

True, but I do not agree with your views on immigrants and different cultures being a problem. However, I do feel like they bring out the worst in the Dallas people, because, as you said, they are an "uppity" crowd, and if you aren't on their exact level, you are dirt to them. If you ask me, the real problem is how high conformity is held. I know that in a town near Dallas, Mesquite, it's district (Mesquite ISD) insists that you can not stand out, and even a multi-colored jacket is considered standing out to them.

Nashville rude? I agree that the interstates there are ridiculous, but I've actually lived there and never found it to be a rude place. I was told by many who live there now that all pitched in together to help each other after the flood last year.

Drivers in FL are MUCH worse. And we've been through Nashville recently-like last year.

I just moved to Arlington and go into Dallas frequently. I'm originally a Californian. Made it here by way of Jacksonville, FL, Atlanta, and New Orleans in the Navy. I feel very out of place here, because I believe in smiling at people, being courteous on the roads, holding doors open for others, saying thank you. Someone stated that a few encounters can't apply to an entire city. But when it happens day in and day out by people of any color or background, it applies to the region. People are very uppity, self-centered, and arrogant. But I will say that other transplants like myself are friendly. And I run into a few very kind locals. It's either one extreme or the other.

Wow I love living in Nor Cal. Great mix of people. Friendly most of the time. Unless Rude is called for. Lets face it the more crowded it is the more rude people become period. No matter where you are at.

I live in this states Capital and for a city its size people are very friendly. The Rude ones down in L.A. are only the jealous ones who are not really making it out here. The ones who come out on a dream and have it shattered quickly. And give up but stay and make everyone's life miserable.

Or they go back to their home state and blame the native Californians. No doubt we do live a faster pace out here though. And its only so expensive due to its popularity from T.V. land.

People born and raised out here tend to act allot different than those with pipe dreams. Trust me L.A. is tiny compared to all of California. Just ask the dairy farmers or the Vineyard owners. The Vaquero's or the California Ranchers and the Mountain folk. This state is very diverse.

P.S. the only reason I would not live in L.A. is the traffic. And it is so Spread out it takes hours to get to anything. Plus they have the Lakers and the Dodgers (GO GIANTS) lol

Dallas--No doubt--I was there was about 9 months in the 1970s and got sick and tired of being told by nearly everyone I ran into how great Dallas is and how everywhere else in the country sucks.It is so pervasive that came to the conclusion that they are trying to cover up some sort of a deep seated inferiority complex-- you know what they say about when you are pointing you finger@ someone else you have 3 pointing back @ you? I see NO reason to EVER go back--I even try to avoid flying into DFW to change planes as my whole memory of the place still makes me sick to my stomach and gives me a headache.

I am a so-called "Yankee" native. I moved to Tennessee awhile back and lived in the Knoxville area for about four years......Great People, until you tell them where you are from...... Southern Hospitality??....where??...I never found any... My advice is when they ask you where you came from, just say south Florida...

You probably didn't encounter anyone that was actually born and raised in Santa Fe. Most of the people in the tourism business in Santa Fe are from somewhere other than New Mexico (with the exception of most of the Native Americans). Most of the "artists" there were somehow "inspired" to locate their snobby butts in Santa Fe.

No, I encountered plenty of native Santa Feans....they were mostly uneducated service oriented workers and thieves. For the most part, you can remove the entire state of New Mexico from the union and it wouldn't matter. What a wasteland. BTW, I wasn't there as a tourist..spent a lot of time there on an extended business related project.

I, too, am an evil New Mexican. I used to work in the hospitality business in Santa Fe, and I recall that the tourists were the most obnoxious people around. Besides, it is true that most of the natives have been forced out by the Californians, and indeed, it is the transplanted Santa Feans who are rude. I now live in a mountain resort town, and the transplants from Florida are the most rude here!

If we're going to start removing states from the union, maybe we should just start the Civil War all over again, and save ourselves the trouble! Just don't forget what that little "conflict" cost. (I mean in terms of bloodshed, death, etc.)

Christina, I lived in Alamogordo for over a year and loved New Mexico. We Thought about moving there permanently. The problem wasn't so much the New Mexicans, but rather the influx of outsiders with their prejudices. Beautiful state!

One of the components that makes America the best place in the world is the room to feel free! Seeing Santa Fe on this list at all is ridiculous. It's not a metropolitan area of 7 million; it's a small town of 70,000. Comparing it to the others is apples and oranges. That said, there is absolutely no way it is rude on the scale of most of the other cities mentioned. On the other hand, drivers here are INCREDIBLY bad, as someone above says. That isn't because they're rude, though; it's more a matter of utter cluelessness, combined with derelict vehicles, alien possession, and probably, consumption of mind-altering substances. Not the same thing. (I also consider it a small price to pay for living in such a beautiful, peaceful place.)

You're right. Fort Worth is an extremely nice town with hospitable, down-to-earth people. For those who have never been to Texas, don't judge FW as just a "cowboy town". Yes, it has the stockyards which are great fun, but they also have a MUCH better art district than most other cities in Texas, the Bass Performance Hall is a fantastic venue for shows, symphony, etc and their zoo makes the Dallas zoo look like a parking lot. Not to mention the great food and entertainment in the Sundance Square area. Yep, FW rocks.

OMG! I just yelled at my husband with the same comments! I hate it when people lump Fort Worth with Dallas as though we are just one giant conglomerate that is to be rated and evaluated as one individual identity! We are two different cities separated by 20+ miles of land and several suburbs. The people in Fort Worth are more laid back, take life a lot more slowly and are not uppity stuck up New York Wannabee's like Dallas. I do wish that people would get this whole super metropolitan theory out of their heads and realize that Fort Worth is its own entity with its own culture and fantastic people!

Dallas is the home of the $30,000 millionaires. I live in the suburbs between Dallas and Ft. Worth. I work in Dallas, but go out for fun in Ft. Worth. The people who live along the Tollway are just as bad, but can't afford to live in Dallas. If I hear from one more person in Plano how great they are, I'm going to puke.

I have to agree with he zoo comment...I went to the Dallas zoo...there were maybe a few animals, and all of the food is way overpriced. The only thing good about the Dallas zoo is the awesome looking McDonalds plopped in front of it. And the giraffe statue is pretty cool looking too. (Funny how the outside things say "Over here is cool!" and you get in to see the joke that is Dallas zoo. There was this one comedians bit that reminded me of the zoo, but I can not remember who it was. It was basically: a few people got together and wanted make a zoo. One dude had a cat, one had a bird, one had a dog, and one had a turtle. You get in the zoo after paying a bunch of money and there are 4 animals.)

So true. I live 35 miles south of Dallas and it takes an act of God to get me to go there. Ft. Worth and Arlington, no problem. Agree about the $30,000 millionaires , too.

Thanks for reminding me. Vancouver is the rudest city I've ever been in. The people won't talk to you unless you offer them an American cigarette. Then, you can't get rid of them.

The city of Vancouver has extremely strict "No Smoking' bylaws that are vigorously enforced. Vancouver is a health-conscious city, second-hand smoke isn't tolerated in public.

I agree Vancouver is the scariest city I have ever been to. Panhandlers everywhere. If they don't feel you gave them enough, they will follow you on the Sky Train. Drug needles on the streets, rude restaurant service. Found one nice local business owner (yes, an Asian contrary to popular comments) in a whole week of visiting.

I actually included something about Vancouver in an earlier comment but I erased it as irrelevant. I agree that it was scary due to con artists. When we were there we had people attempt to con us at least 6 times in one night! (We were only there one night.) We almost crossed paths with another couple; but they ran away from us, seemingly afraid we would try to con them!

Boomers, I was in Gas Town back in '74, and found the folks there quite reasonable, especially when I told them I was from California. That was then, and this is now. I'm sorry to hear V.B.C described that way. The demeanor of the folks here in Seattle has change an awful lot since then also.

I was about to say the opposite... Ive spent most of my life in Albany, Schenectady and the nearby suburbs, but most of my family lives in the boroughs. I think its kinda rare to see someone being blatantly rude anywhere Ive been, but upstate NY... Saratoga, Ballston Spa and essentially the entire Capital District is home to some of the most inconsiderate and selfish people Ive ever known. I use the term sparingly but "haters" seems to best fit the vibe. The talent and arts are long gone on account of everyone cutting down anyone who gives it a shot. The percentage of rip-off artists, scams and other money swindling schemes is incredibly high. Cops are a nightmare, politicians are constantly on the local news for driving drunk or slapping their wives around... and thats when theyre not under the spotlight from the SEC or FBI. Whats even better... anyone ever run into a NY State Employee? Thats where NY keeps their mentally handicapped! Theyre like talking to muddy rocks that know how to smoke cigarettes and scratch lotto tickets.

There are a lot of other adjectives I'd use before "rude", the people sure could stand to be shaken out of their lifeless, uncaring routines though.

...but at least its not New Jersey!

When I was visiting one of the boroughs, the people we were visiting used to say something like, "You think they are out to get you-well, they ARE!" Quite comforting to strangers in NY, esp when we had to walk blocks carrying all our stuff in both hands at night as we walked past brownstones while peering anxiously at all the potential hiding places they concealed as well as past vacant lots and basketball courts due to a sudden change of plan. We met a friend of mine from Connecticut in the Village for Halloween then took the subway back as a group. Our paths diverged then suddenly all of them went through their styles leaving my friend alone. I was shocked that they expected her to return to Connecticut alone after midnight, so I went through hers with her. They could have cared less what happened to her. I honestly can't remember how it all worked out, but if I hadn't pitched a fit she and I would have been alone in the station after midnight thanks to those guys. Thought that was pretty rude since we were their guests after all.

I s'pose thats fair to say... however, I feel theres something to be said for knowing and living the area. It is somewhat difficult to keep in mind that metro NY is really the only part in the country that has such an elaborate subway system, the fact that tourists might need help getting used to it at first and the presence of safety features arent necessarily outlined to travelers. Those facilities are monitored by foot cops, cctv and voice activated cameras at all times... the big thing to point out as a means of exploiting the good nature of the locals - should the need ever arise, its nothing short of commonplace to see at least a dozen or more New Yorkers jump in and often times put their own lives and safety at risk to help someone else.

As far as this particular situation, I can sympathize. Thats inconsiderate to do to somebody whether your in a subway in East NY or some dive bar in Memphis. It is however, "The City That Never Sleeps", and its not uncommon at all to have to wait in the subway terminal by yourself at 3am... and although its ignorant for me to assume your friends character without knowing them, its easy to overlook the perspective of a visitor when that type of situation is so common.

Im an advocate of your actions though... even here in Albany, where I can assure you youre ten times more likely to be assaulted, hassled or inconvenienced at random by a stranger than any place in the 5 boroughs - its always a good idea to have someone with you in an unfamiliar place especially after dark near enclosed places. Manners aside, being conscious of your surroundings and using your brain often wins in the end.

though it can feel a little strange to be at the station "alone", it's not that bad. first, there are so many people going from work, second, many stations have a mta employe. i must admit i wouldn't dare to go everywhere, there are certain places in the city i've never been even during the day, but many parts of manhattan are pretty safe after midnight as well.

Thanks, all-but these same people had been telling us that some vague "they" were "out to get you" the whole visit; so I didn't quite feel the comfort you do living there. Also, it was Halloween. My friend visiting from CT and I were orig. from MS, where New Yorkers aren't typically admired, unfortunately (mostly out of ignorance, really)-though I had lived in FL for years-so there were a lot of reasons why we were fearful that night.

I now believe it was mainly that particular group. Long story, dysfunctional family. I've been to Manhattan since then, and the people did not seem rude to me at all. I tripped and fell in Times Square, and people actually came to help me up! Here in FL they'd let me rot or tromp over me! (or take my wallet, depending on where I was) Don't get me wrong, there are very nice, wonderful people in FL; and we have terrific friends from all over the country. (And I admire many New Yorkers now!) The general atmosphere here is ruder than some places, however.

I can definitely dig that... some of my family is from South Carolina, its like a different world! That has to be the most friendly and hospitable place on the planet!

Never in my life have I ever felt so much like an outsider ...visiting family no less! I mean, finding someone to pick on your New York accent is like looking for a booger under a library desk, I was prepared for that and its typically all in fun. No one down there uses swear words or foul language at all. Which, as many of you know, a strategically and frequently placed "F**k" is a New Yorkers weapon of choice... they we're using terms my brother and I gave up at about 6 years old?!? It was strangely refreshing!

The entire area is full of the most charming (another term I use for very specific occasions) and just plain decent human beings Ive ever had the pleasure of meeting! I dont think I could've been treated any better if I was giving away free beer!

I love New York (warts and all) and am proud to call it my home, but that southern hospitality thing... if anybody out there wonders if America still exists, Charleston, SC is a good place to start looking!

Amen. I've traveled and resided through nearly the entire country, and you will find both good and bad, just like anywhere else in the world. However, America in general is chronically overrun with immigrants of both the legal and (mostly) illegal variety, as well as literally tens of millions of tourists who can't read English or figure out which side of the road to drive on or how to make turns or park. The U.S. citizens who are born and raised here are quite fed up with it and with being forced to use their hard-earned tax dollars to support those immigrants and the rest of the world. Our country is literally financially destitute, yet we keep printing worthless money and handing it out to everyone like candy, digging the pit deeper and deeper. Our people are struggling in every corner of the country, and we can't even help our own homeless and hungry, yet we keep giving handouts to everyone who crosses our borders when they have done NOTHING to deserve it. It has made everyone here weary of the burden and, as the Bible predicted, "the love of the greater number has cooled off." We are dominated by corporations and continually bombarded with hateful images and subliminal "me first" messages from the corporate-controlled media, which is programming the vast majority of us to become dumbed-down, shallow, selfish, vain, egotistical haters. Those who do anything to protest are immediately shouted down and discredited and receive no "air time" in the media, and if they do anything that really raises a stink, they are shut away in jail or made to "disappear." So, what do you expect?

Or how about us citizens who are tired and fed up with other citizens whining about immigrants and blaming them. Instead of pulling ouselves up by the bootstraps and opening our own business's. Taking back those jobs that illegals have. Instead of expecting the government to help us out with Jobs. How many of our citizens are standing outside the Home depots waiting for work?

Then in the same post to start quoting the very book that expects us to love thy Neighbor and our enemies for they are children of the same GOD at least according to our Preachers or Pastors or Priests. That I wont follow due to the hypocrites and sheep like followers.

Truth be told immigrants are not our major problem. Sending most of our money and jobs to Asia for the last 4 decades is our major problem. I don't want jobs I want start up business's here in America. I want the mom and pop store back. I want American grown produce and meat.

Totally agree about L.A. I've visited most of the cities on the list, and have actually lived in or near several of them. And, while I've experienced varying levels of rude behavior in all of them, it's typically isolated incidents . . . e.g. the cabbie in Philly who kindly offered to "knock the teeth out of my smart mouth," the bartender in N.Y. who threw money back in my face for correcting him on my drink order, and the list goes on. However, L.A. is the only city in which I've witnessed - or been subjected to - egregiously rude behavior EVERY SINGLE TIME I've been there.

You do realize that California is a very large state, right? L.A. may get the most exposure, but it hardly represents the entire state. Nice generalization, there.

Thank you for making that distinction. Because of Hollywood, SoCal is limited to concern about who you know, what you drive, your pocket book. I grew up in the Bay. We will talk your ear off. You could be doing a handstand on a corner painted in purple polka dots in your birthday suit and we'll strike up a conversation, or at least say what's up.

I am a native Californian and I can tell you from personal experience that the actual residents of California are nice it's the tourists and anyone who moves to California who are rude.

There was a time when California was considered the epitome of southern hospitality, about seventy years ago. Does anybody know what happens when a bunch of rats are put into a small cage, they start chewing on each other. As long as the comfort zone of humans diminish the level of rudeness and hostility will increase, no matter what the city is. People need space, and the lack of it can make for some ugly situations, road rage being one of them. I am a former CA resident, and I know what it used to be like.

LT34-2, #9.3, I agree. Originally from southern Ca but moved to the bay in '87. I used to hang out at the Los Gatos Roasting Co. in the A.M., and on several occasions saw Steve Wozniak wearing a three piece suit standing next to his Porche talking with anyone that struck up a conversation with him. It didn't matter what they wore or what they drove. A lot of the Bay Area is like that. I did notice after our '89 quake that a lot of folks came to Los Gatos to see the damage, then they wouldn't leave. Most of them from Campbell. After that the neighborhood went to hell!

I grew up in Portland Oregon and I think Portland is full of rude, depressed people like Seattle. The crappy weather make people cranky!

I lived in both Seattle and Portland for many years. I generally found the people in Portland to be pretty friendly, much more so than in Seattle. I think a lot of it depends on where you go and what you do. In Seattle for instance, I'd say you're far more likely to run into rude people in Belltown or Pioneer Square than in say Capitol Hill . . . at least when I lived there, that is. And the east side? Just head to Kirkland for the most arrogant, obnoxious and self-important people in the Pacific Northwest.

I agree with the remark about Seattle! I loved getting "flipped off", and ending up behind the same car at the next stop light! Salem, Oregon is pretty rough for driving also. Beware of the young lovies with their cell phones who run red lights! I was amazed that my car insurance actually went down after moving from Olympia, Wa., with the way they drive here in "Cherry City", capitol of the "Beaver State"! As far as Boston goes, my experience with those people was that they postured alot, and I was relieved to end up on the West coast where people are not in each other's faces, and more layed back! (Despite their driving habits!)

Seattle is really awesome, but there are the downsides i guess. I mean, yes there are plenty of those people with their starbucks and cell phones, but the same in New york, los angeles, everywhere! You cant just blame one city for something that a majority of cities do. However i can agree that its still not the most "positive" vibe. the weather usually contributes to that. lol

I lived in Tacoma, WA for 15 months and the "Seattle Freeze" which has nothing to do with weather is unfortunately not restricted to Seattle. My neighbors would hardly talk to me, running back into their houses as fast as they could. After many invitations of having them come over for coffee or something they finally agreed to a certain time and then did not show up without calling. When asked later why they didn't show, did something happen, I was informed they"got busy" and upon asking why they didn't call I was given a look (and no answer) as if I was the most impertinent person ever for asking. This happened more than once.

Oh sure, people on the street walking smile at everybody and even say hello, it's a great day etc, but that's because they are only passing you, they don't have to interact any further. Same went for store clerks.

California may have a reputation as being "weird" but I will put up with weird before I will put up with rude. Besides that, the weather is really horrible, the rain may be ok and so are the grey skies, but the cold is unbearable and the pretense that it "hardly ever snows" on the West side of the Cascades is a big fat lie. When I lived there it snowed 3 times for a week at a time and the Seattle airport was so snowed in that planes could land but to get to the airport was another matter and only the really big roads were plowed. I never thought I would be happy to move back to SoCal, if nothing else at least I'm finally warm again and not freezing to death.

Thats probably your problem living on the outskirts is WORSE than the citiy. They are so friendly downtown cap hill etc. You should try it you miss out, Tacoma I hate though, Bellevue likes to think their better is all.

I'm from the Olympic Peninsula, born and raised. I lived in Tacoma for 5 years, in DC for 1 year and in London for 2. Seattle and Portland are the NICEST cities I've ever lived in!!

Every European I've met living in London (and many people I met living in DC) have commented to me on how much they love Seattle and the PNW and how NICE the people are!

I love going out in Seattle and meeting new people. I think we are friendly and out going and just have a very laid back attitude. We are quite liberal and very proud of the fact that we rank so high on intelligence of the residence, being an entrepreneur city, and being a green city, but that doesn't make us rude.

I've asked people for directions in both Portland and Seattle, people don't only kindly help me out, but some have even shown me where to go. You try to do the same thing in DC or London and people flat out ignore the fact that you are talking to them.

London makes me furious at how rude the people are and realize how nice the people in the PNW are!

Honolulu should be friendly! Where else in the world is 72 degrees and sunny in February considered a bad weather day?

Yes, we all really need Aloha spirit. They have a lovely vibe to them. ITs incredible. They love their land, never litter, and the sights are incredible. Just an amazing place to be.

Christy: Gromitradio probably went to Hawaii public schools so never learned how to read. Friendly place only because their economy is totally dependent upon visitors, but not the mythological paradise that it's cracked up to be. Ever heard of the word "haole", especially when it is used with intense contempt? Try living in Honolulu rather than just visiting. You'll see. Many in Honolulu are under huge pressure to make ends meet because of the huge cost of living, "the price of paradise". Public education is terrible. Most people on the mainland actually have it easier economically. Aloha!

Respectfully, I disagree. I lived in Hawaii a short time. If the locals are friendly to you, it's because you're either an attractive girl or you're being set up to be robbed. The worst men in the USA live in Hawaii, IMHO.

I wholeheartedly agree -- I lived in New York for over a decade, and never ran into anyone who was rude to me. Then again, I am nice and polite to them. I don't immediately start criticiziing or complaining to anyone about their home towns.

I lived in NYC for years. People mistake being rushed for rude. I can tell you first hand I've seen many a New Yorker stop, offer help, take people to where they need to go, all sorts of things. But tourists just don't understand that people have jobs and lives and are under constant pressure to get a million things done and be on time about it.

I can't tell you how many people stood on corners in mid town at rush hour gawping up at the buildings blocking foot traffic. I can't tell you how many people wanted directions and after being given them pulled out a huge fold out map and demanded you go through it with them. I can't tell you how many people demanded and insisted and complained because things weren't like home.

And a tip from a traveler, don't complain to someone about their City. You won't get a good response. Don't say it's dirty or crowded or things are expensive and not worth it. It just makes people think you should go home and you might get that response.

Sorry but my rude experiences in NY were not rushed people but plain FULL OUT rude. Like the women in Fairway Market (Brooklyn) that helped herself to handle items I was purchasing and had in my cart. As I was standing in line to pay she felt it was completely appropriate to riffle thru my cart to see what I was purchasing. When I said "Excuse me, those are items that I'm purchasing" She had the nerve to say "What a Bitch, I was just looking!" As if I did something wrong. And how about the day I was in court in New City and a women spilled coffee on a bench we BOTH were sitting on. Instead of wiping it up with her napkins that she had plenty of, she decided to walk away. Oh and maybe THIS was a case of rushed.... I was standing ouside a Deli waiting for someone and politely asked a women if she had the time - Her response "Glad I bought a watch for your convenience, maybe you should do the same!" That is 3 of the MANY MANY experiences I could site about the "rushed people I encounteed in NY. And add to the fact I have lived in Florida most of my life and they come here and because THEY are here on vacation they think they are ENTITLED to illegally park, not have to wait in line for anything AND tell us continually "How it's done up North" i.e. "That will be $11.42...... "Well, that's not what I pay in New York!" We don't care how it's done in NY or what you pay in New York. And I have a suggestion for everyone that does................GO BACK! As for me, I never will!

I feel your pain I lived in New York for 10 years no problems at all, I recieved alot of help from New Yorkers But Philly lived there for 5 months a woman stabbed me in my ear I defended myself then she lied to the police, I spent 3 days in jail over New Years weekend had to get an attorney to get me off which he did Judge and court found out the hard way when the Judge aquitted me of all charges the crazy lady threw a pen at the Judge and was arrested on the spot... Sister of brotherly hate is Philadelphia.... The most nasties people in the world.....I love New York no worries...

Wow sounds like my former neighbors they were from Pittsburg. Just UNBELIEVABLE people evil hateful people. Maybe its the poison from the steel mills leached into their water or something. Damaged their brain and now they have no soul.

I also grew up in Utah. The reason people back East seem rude to us Utahns is because we are taught to be timid and soft by the certain prevailing religion. People in the East replace some of our simple courtesies with a little pushiness and the belief that you should know what you want. It's a more competitive way of living, but it breeds stronger people. People in Utah are whiny pushovers, Mormon or not. The women are more materialistic too. They wear more make up and look "better", when in reality they just look fake. You just haven't acclimated to women radiating their natural beauty back East, as opposed to women throwing a pound of make-up on in the morning. I feel the need to add that this is just from my experience in western PA and New Jersey in the past decade.

@Texan294????-------We once had a pretty nice place to raise kids in the Texas panhandle, now we're overrun with thousands and thousands of rude, entitled, nasty, front yard parking Mexicans, most of them illegal! Our little kids are now minorities in their own schools and we wait to buy groceries behind illegals with Lone Star cards , yet they all are driving new vehicles! You can taste the resentment , hate and entitlement from these people strictly because of our federal governments 'collusion with Mexico! I owe no allegiance to a federal government that colludes with illegals and openly oppresses its' legal population! Trouble is coming!

I totally agree with you and San Diego is quickly becoming another rude, unsocialized dumping ground. This is severely is impacting safety while driving on the freeways. I often fear for my life driving on the 805 southbound or 15 southbound at rush hour. I've lived in NYC, DC, visiting Boston and Cnicago...I've not seen anything like the freeway madness in S.D....you are correct regarding the sense of entitlement...getting everything for nothing...this is not limilted to driving on the freeways, fyi!!!
