I agree Roy Wilson. No other religion advocates the killing of those who do not believe in that particular religion. The worst is that the radicals are using the internet to convince their followers to kill on their own in the name of Allah. Many of the recent killings were from people who were radicalized with a couple months of killing. I don't want to be suspicious of anyone because of their religion but the possibility of someone I know killing me after reading evil rants on the internet is frightening. The outraged Muslims need to step up and start preaching against the radicals not the folks in Washington trying to stop them from killing other innocent people of other faiths.

The fact is that while we allow BinLadin to remain alive and use overly non invasive tactics in the middle east ( overly gentle rules of engagement ) our government still tries to pull the wool over the fact that we were attacked by Saudis on 9/11. We made these people rich, now the chickens have come home to roost. Not all Muslims are terrorists, any more than any other racial or religious group, but the fact is that it is the Saudis who represent not a threat but a confirmed enemy of the United States. We gave them oil, we can take it back. They have lots of money in our banks which should be seized to offset losses pursuant to 9/11. Those who wish to try to bring their pedophile / misogynistic laws to our country should be expelled. But there are plenty of Christian terrorists whose "rights" are evidently protected by the supreme court. So why not start with the known enemies.

No other religion scares me more..... Yes, there are radicals in other religions, but I have found none that call for the killing of all "non-believers."

As for singling Muslims out - my cousin served overseas for several years. He can vouch for some by saying there are definitely two kinds of Muslims, the ones who are like regular people and love all and just want peace, and then there are the extremist Muslims that want America to fall and send their own women and children to kill themselves just to kill as many American soldiers as they can.

I am all for this hearing. I just hope it stays on the path intended for the extremists.

Before making statements like this I suggest you take a long hard look at the history of Christianity. How many civilizations were wiped out in the name of Christianity? For how many centuries have Christians tried to destroy the Jewish people?

I don't paint all Christians with that brush, but I do remind people that they need to look at their own religion honestly before they start to make ill informed and prejudicial statements about others. Everything that is now being said about Islam was being said about Jews not all that long ago.

In Orange County, California, a large group of Muslims attended a function at a non-profit organization that helps battered women. These Muslims wanted to show everyone that they do not support extremism or Sharia Law. They came to donate a large sum of money to help abused women.

The local Tea Party organized a protest and chanted "Go Back Home, Go Back Home."

Again, these Muslims went to a non-profit to show they DO NOT SUPPORT SHARIA LAW . . . they were only donating money to help battered women. American conservatives, filled with anti-Muslim hate, protested their donation and told them to "Go Back Home." They were DONATING TO A CHARITY, and this is how the Tea Party responded.

These congressional hearings want to say that Muslims are not doing enough to stop radicalization, yet look how YOU treat them when they do something positive. I am completely disgusted how these so-called conservative "Christians" treat other people who are trying to do a good thing.

There is a big difference that you are not acknowledging. Yes, any form of violence is wrong, and any form of violence committed in the name of religion can be called "religious extremism" or "radicalization". How many innocent victims have been killed by Christian extremists bombing abortion clinics in this country? Free speech does protect the right to protest, whether or not you or I may agree with the message. As for the abortion doctor who was murdered...a premeditated act of murder perpetrated against an individual over a personal religious belief...and of which many, many Christians DID IN FACT, speak up against...and all mainstream Christian Clergy denounced the killing of the doctor. If the perpetrator of the attack had blown up the church building to kill as many innocent people as he could in the attack against the abortion doctor...that would have equated with the religious terrorism being looked at in these hearings. It is the completely unprovoked act of mass murdering as many innocent, unarmed people as possible...in the name of a Religious/Political agenda...not to be confused with the premeditated murder of an individual with a motive of a personal agenda based in religious belief. Actually 6% of all terrorist attacks in the West over the last 20 years have been conducted by Muslims. So most Muslims are not terrorists and most terrorists are not Muslims. There's very little correlation between the two.

You feelings have been debunked by statistics, more times than I can count. First, how many terrorists are currently involved in the Al Queda network? The CIA puts it at under 1,000 . . . but for you, let's say 1,000. Now, apply that to the billions of Muslims and let me know what percentage that is. Go on, do the math.

Second, out of all terrorist activities performed across the world, 6% are committed by Muslims. Thus, the majority of terrorist attacks are NOT by Muslims.

I never said I do not believe the statistic...I was asking for more information about it, in trying to understand where the substanial other terrorist threats would be generated from...and compare how we address those threats. I was serious, and you have chosen to condemn and label me, without knowing anything about me. As the Spokane headlines mentioned above show, one threat would apparently come from white suprematist groups. Do you think caucasions should protest any congressional hearings on that idealogy/group in attempting to address that element of threat of violence/terrorism? Or should we all (whites included) embrace any government hearing on the group and it's idealogy in an attempt to fact find and explore ways to protect innocent people from extremist violence and the causes/influences in the radicalization of the perpetrators?

By the way, I am not a "conservative", by definition...nor a republican, democrat, liberal, etc. I am an independent, and just try to look at the facts...which is what I was asking about.

If your claim is world wide terrorist acts committed by all groups then that is pure spin. This article was about terrorist acts commited against the United States. The ones above are all classified as terrorist attacks. In the list, they included the bombing in Oklahoma by McVeigh when he did it. It was classified as a terrorist act. The point being... keep with the premise of the article. It did not include terrorist acts commited in South America by latino groups against latino groups because it's impertinent to the discussion. Do you believe it is OK to hold legislative hearings on school violence in an attempt to investigate how school students become killers, or is that stereotyping our students as killers, and insensitive to them?

With all due respect, if the congressional hearing actually wanted to investigate the REAL threat, they would start with Latino groups which make up 42% of the terrorist attacks on US soil (source: FBI).

Quran (8:39) - "And fight with them until there is no more persecution and religion should be only for Allah" From the historical context we know that the "persecution" spoken of here was simply the refusal by the Meccans to allow Muhammad to enter their city and perform the Haj. Other Muslims were able to travel there, just not as an armed group, since Muhammad declared war on Mecca prior to his eviction. The Meccans were also acting in defense of their religion, since it was Muhammad's intention to destroy their idols and establish Islam by force (which he later did). Hence the critical part of this verse is to fight until "religion is only for Allah." According to Ibn Ishaq (324), Muhammad justified the violence further by explaining that "Allah must have no rivals."

Quran (8:57) - "If thou comest on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them, that haply they may remember."

Quran (8:59-60) - "And let not those who disbelieve suppose that they can outstrip (Allah's Purpose). Lo! they cannot escape. Make ready for them all thou canst of (armed) force and of horses tethered, that thereby ye may dismay the enemy of Allah and your enemy."

Quran (9:5) - "So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them." According to this verse, the best way of staying safe from Muslim violence is to convert to Islam. Prayer (salat) and the poor tax (zakat) are among the religions Five Pillars.

Quran (9:14) - "Fight them, Allah will punish them by your hands and bring them to disgrace..."

Quran (9:20) - "Those who believe, and have left their homes and striven with their wealth and their lives in Allah's way are of much greater worth in Allah's sight. These are they who are triumphant." The "striving" spoken of here is Jihad.

Quran (9:29) - "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." "People of the Book" refers to Christians and Jews. This was one of the final "revelations" from Allah and it set in motion the tenacious military expansion, in which Muhammad's companions managed to conquer two-thirds of the Christian world in just the next 100 years. Islam is intended to dominate all other people and faiths.

Quran (9:30) - "And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah; and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah; these are the words of their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before; may Allah destroy them; how they are turned away!"

Quran (9:38-39) - "O ye who believe! what is the matter with you, that, when ye are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah, ye cling heavily to the earth? Do ye prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the Hereafter. Unless ye go forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty, and put others in your place." This is a warning to those who refuse to fight, that they will be punished with Hell.

Quran (9:41) - "Go forth, light-armed and heavy-armed, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the way of Allah! That is best for you if ye but knew." See also the verse that follows (9:42) - "If there had been immediate gain (in sight), and the journey easy, they would (all) without doubt have followed thee, but the distance was long, (and weighed) on them" This contradicts the myth that Muslims are to fight only in self-defense, since the wording implies that battle will be waged a long distance from home (in another country and on Christian soil, in this case, according to the historians).

To say to the problem only exists with radical Islam is foolish. Radical Islam and moderate Islam share the same fundamental beliefs that make it extremely different from any western religion.

1. Inequality between men and women. All other religions now believe that men and women should be treated and respected equally.

2. Intolerance of other religions and cultures. This is one of the teachings of the Koran. It teaches peace if you are a Muslim. If not, you better watch your back.

In a report published in February, Kurzman compiled the number of Muslim Americans who took part in known terror plots — both carried out and disrupted — since 2001.

There were 47 such plots in 2009, twice the number as the year before. But after that spike, the number fell again to 20 in 2010, within the range it had been in for most of the decade.

The study found that Muslims engaged in terror plots at a higher rate than non-Muslims, though still at a low level compared with overall violence in the U.S. — 33 deaths in the decade compared to 150,000 homicide deaths over the same period.

And he notes that of the terror plots that were disrupted, one-third to one-half of the tips to authorities came from others in the Muslim community.

It's more than obvious that the US has 50 times more problems with homicides(most probably committed by American non muslim ), than it does with extremist/radical Muslim terrorist attacks.

It's no surprise that many "Americans" will waste their energy and anger over the less likely threat(of "violent Muslims!"), instead of focusing on the more pressing and dangerous problem we have(American grown crime).

There is a serious conflict within the Muslim community. Fundamentally, Islam by it's very nature and teachings is violent. It is dominating and controlling and exceptionally mysogynistic. The more secular Muslims essentially have to go against the tenets of Islam. Having said that, the same is true as regards the Old Testament. Christians have their radical, fundamentist sects but they are in the minority. This is not the case with Islam and then there is the issue of Sharia law and the implementation thereof.

Look to England, there are many stories of the English madrassas teaching children the essence of Sharia law. Some confiscated textbooks contained illustrations showing the proper methods for cutting off hands and feet. These were books given to teenage boys. King should do some proper investigations and there should be unbiased witnesses, the investigation should happen despite the protests. If nothing is found then the groups should be exonerated.

I don't think they are by nature violent. However, their view of religion is very different than ours.

My problem culturally is that here in this country we have as a tenant of our freedoms the separation of church and state. We conservatives and liberals frequently argue amongst ourselves over social issue specifics but neither side seriously disagrees with the separation amendment within the Constitution nor do we seek violent actions against those we disagree with (at least the sane among us). But for a Muslim (and specifically the Jihadist), their religion IS their government (i.e. Sharia law). There is no separation. This conflicts and is something as a society we need to work through. Me personally, I like the separation but I understand that not everyone sees that "separation" as I do (for example the arguments we have with things like publishing the 10 commandments in courthouses). The fundamentalist Muslim not only doesn't understand this point of view(it's culturally different) but also violently opposes it and seeks to punish those with whom he/she disagree. I want to empahsize this is not mainstream but it is a cultural issue we need to discuss.

What is wrong with profiling? The FBI does it to understand serial killers. The idea of profiling is simply to remove those unlikely to fit the characteristics from consideration. Mindlessly accepting the word "profiling" as somehow being pejorative is to bury your head in the sand. Most serial killers are males...that is a fact that profilers use. Is that use of profiling wrong? I don't think so.

If profiling is used legitimately, i.e. to increase the odds of detecting a threat, it is a good thing. No person in his right mind advocates classing any whole group of people as a threat. On the other hand, there are always those within a group who deserve some extra attention. If the characteristics that invite that attention are correlated with past threatening activities on the part of others who have those same characteristics, it would seem to me to only be prudent to pay attention.

As far as profiling, I cannot understand anybody being so stupid to not realize that you have to do it. The Stuart case in Boston never ceases to anger me. (I live near there) Stuart murdered his wife in a black neighborhood, then shot himself as an alibi, and told the police that a black man shot them both. He almost screwed up, wounding himself so badly that he almost died. So the police believed that nobody would have done that to make up the story. Obviously, they commenced a manhunt for a black man. What total idiot would say that they should've been looking for a white man, or an Oriental, or Hispanic or American Indian. They even had a black man bragging that he did it, and he was turned in by a elderly black woman. Then when the police solved the case (when the killer's brother came forward) the black community was all up in arms that they were originally looking for a black man. How absolutely irrational is that? If the police had not originally been looking for a black man, if they had been pulling in white men, I for one would have been calling for the entire police force to be fired for incompetence. I know that this is a case of race, and Islam is not a race. And a person of any race can be a Muslim. It took until the early 2000's to have the government of Peru to be held accountable to their aggressive responses on civilians in the rural areas of the Andes (which included a minority of cases involving sexual abuse to women through rape and what not). This was because of the provocative nature of the Sendero Lunminoso that did using bombing of buildings and what not to kill innocent people and even to farmers because they were of the "old state" which in the Communist Ideology of the Sendero justified killing their animals and the farmers along with many other people who wanted no part in the political conflict. The various denominations around the world have their strong points and their weaknesses. There are all kinds of people with all kinds of beliefs. There are those whose belief is that we must all co-exist. That's a nice healthy thought. However, the murderer's are not interested in co-existence, no matter what religion they support.

Not all Muslims are terrorists (in fact, only a very small percentage are), but nearly all terrorists are Muslims and 99+% of suicide bombers are Muslims. If you want to prevent terrorism in the U.S., it's pretty clear where to start.

The acts of terrorism are inherently evil. We all know this. I never once have tried to justify the actions of these animals killing civilians in the name of a religion...any religion. Worldwide anger toward US foreign policy is not an excuse to kill anyone and everyone. I've debated the topic with many friends, classmates, even strangers looking to see if I would waver. The bottom line is, there is no excuse. While I feel for those suffering from foreign policy gone haywire, I would never condone such atrocities against other civilians to avenge it. Unfortunately, in an area of the world abundant with poverty, the fanatical "leaders" exploit those poor folks with promises of a better afterlife. When they are convinced that their current life is hell on earth, they're ready to do anything for the hope of something better. Again, not justifying or excusing it. The answer might lie in trying to address the issues of poverty-stricken areas. I'm not expecting it to stop it altogether (fanatics will always find a way to spread their hate), but it may slow it down. I understand that the economy of a Middle Eastern country might not be everyone's top priority, but how can it hurt us any more than what we're going through right now?
I'm upset that it has come to congressional hearings, but I'm not surprised. I only hope that it doesn't become an all out witch hunt.

The problem with all religions, Christianity included, is that the scriptures can be used by "spiritual" leaders to achieve their own agendas.
