Do you think the U.S. government will shut down at midnight?
This is about as clear and easy to understand as it can be. The article below is completely neutral, neither anti-republican or democrat. Charlie Reese, a retired reporter for the Orlando Sentinel, has hit the nail directly on the head, defining clearly who it is that in the final analysis must assume responsibility for the judgments made that impact each one of us every day. It's a short but good read. Worth the time. Worth remembering!
545 vs. 300,000,000 People

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.
Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?
Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?
You and I don't propose a federal budget. The President does.
You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.
You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.
You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.
You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.
One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.
I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.
I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.
Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.
What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.
The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? John Boehner. He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.
If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.
If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.
If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it's because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan ...
If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.
There are no insoluble government problems.
Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.
Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.
They, and they alone, have the power.
They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.
Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees...
We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

That is about the best description of the problems with government I've ever read.
However, trying to motivate 30 mil people to do something that benefits both this country and its' citizens is an even bigger problem. Many would rather sit on the sidelines and let others handle the problems. Many won't even consider listening to people with various opinions simply because it's not within their narrow field of vision.
People need to open their eyes and their minds for any meaningful progress to be made.
Congressional and White House budgets need to be slashed.
No congressional raises for the next 3 years.
Stiff fines, published names for Medicaid and social service programs fraud
and if incumbents can't get the job done let's clean house.

The Joke is that each side feels it's the othersides fault as by the reply comments below your article. And the new congressman and woman are no better than the old. We use to compromise in this country, try to find common ground and work from there. But in this modern media age we posture instead of legislate. We play to the lowest common demoninator of each side. It use to be that we were a centrist nation, slowly prodding along in a straight path. But now we swing from left to right. One side comes into power and their agenda is to undue the other sides accomplishments of the other side. And both sides cater to the extremist of their party. So you wonder why Independents are the fastest growing party (10 x faster than the tea party even though they get little press) So when they learn to truely compromise than we can call ourselves a nation again until then we will be a "House Divided......"

The TARP program was created in 2008 to stabilize the financial system and money was allocated to bailout GM. Thank you George Bush.

I think you need to get your facts straight. GE paid no tax last year as an example. I just heard a report yesterday about how Disney has to 'share' over 50% of the money they make in China with the Chinese government. These are just two examples. But of course we can't ask large companies to pay their fair share of taxes in this country or else they might go to China where they'd have to pay 55% instead of the US where they pay closer to 0.

Mine is simple: I keep what I earn. I'll give to who I deem worthy, for causes I find beneficial. No one person can manage my money or my life better than I can. No person, society, or government can help my family and friends in times of duress better than I can.
BLUF (That's Bottom Line Up Front): We can no longer afford to pay for programs that provide no value for America.
2nd BLUF: Elected representatives in both parties BUY VOTES by providing services to those who do not pay for them, on the backs of those that do.
3rd BLUF: Any program that cannot define success and measures BEFORE FUNDING should never be funded. Any program that cannot meet it's measures should be ended immediately. And program that cannot be measured should be ended immediately
4th BLUF: If it can be done in the public sector, no matter how hard it is, then it should not be done in any level of government.
We cannot keep throwing our hard earned money, which is in fact our lives because that is the fruit of our labor and our efforts, to fund every bright idea some unaccountable agency, "gubermint" program, or elected official identifies as another way to grab power. The party is over, and the bill is now due. Hell, when do we get to say "No!"

Why are we indebted upon birth to provide for a class of people who deemed themselves too special to earn their own way? Come on posters. You know last October the democrats had the power to enact any budget they wanted. They didn’t because it was too close to the November elections to enact a wildly expensive, irrational and irresponsible budget that would be theirs alone.
Now, they can still get most of their boondoggle of a budget passed and be able to lay half the blame on the republicans. Why else would they be fighting over the cutting of a paltry few billion in a budget with a 1.6 trillion deficit? So they can say; See? The republicans voted for this budget too.

Not really, they had an opposing Republican President for two of those years and did not have a filibuster proof majority in the Senate until 2009-2010.

Congress is not allowed to change their pay during the current session because the Constitution specifically prohibits any changes in pay (up or down for the current session of Congress). Such changes can only be for future sessions.

Taking this further, all government programs should be self-sufficient. For example, the revenue the entity takes in should pay the expenses.

I agree with everything in your post except for the numbers, 545 is incorrect. 300,000,000 would be the correct number of guilty people.
WE put them where they are. WE allow them to play their games and do nothing about it but run OUR mouths and spout off on the internet.

MDionne if you google why the congress gets paid during a shutdown you will find a related article that legislation was entered in march of this year to allow the military to be paid during the shut down it did not pass

They play the so called conservatives fears of socialism off of the so called liberals fears complete loss of all freedoms, including speech and marriage(read gay marriage). It is similar in a way to Pro Wrestling, they are mortal enemies while on stage, then after they show, they go have dinner and a drink together. The whole time laughing it up all the way to the bank. During Reagan's 8 years, I became somewhat of an Independent in my voting. After George H. W. became president, I became completely Independent. Now, it seems that Americans are waking up(hopefully) by the millions to not vote solely partisan as they are seeing how dangerous it is to our country. Well Karen, if you think slashing around 38 billion from a budget that has a 1.65 trillion deficit qualifies as stopping the Democrat’s wild spending spree, you’re certainly entitled to your opinion.
However, it’s my opinion that the Tea Party’s contention that Boehner sold them out is pretty accurate.
The republicans were played for fools and they caved over the threat of a shutdown. What we now have is a budget with a 1.62 trillion deficit, all to be added to our enormous debt. Some savings.
It seems these republicans were more concerned about de-funding certain programs than actually cutting the budget.

Great post wild but your last sentence is only wishful thinking as these same people have spent enormous amounts of the taxpayer’s money on a myriad of entitlement programs all calculated to put as many people beholding to them as possible, which is how they retain the power to be elected time after time.
Regarding democracy, I believe Karl Marx once stated that as soon as elected officials discover they can raid the treasury with abandon, a democracy will soon collapse under its own weight. Those in congress are doing exactly that and only serving to hasten the end of our democracy.

The feds have been taking my social security taxes for 34 years. That is probably longer than you have been alive. There is no way that it will be turned off.

Control of all 3 branches doesn't mean supermajority. Fillibuster threats mean something is very wrong with the proposals by the other party. That doesn't make it the other party's fault. It means they couldn't come up with something so agenda driven that they can't even get 1 vote from the other party.
If Democrats require supermajority to get their bills passed, it's a problem. Republicans seem to be doing fine with 1/2 of 1/3 the gov't in control.

In the not-to-distant future, the interest alone will be 30% of our budget. Do you not get it? Now that the center has moved so far to the right, I would actually say we are center-left, and I believe that the tea-party - buying into small govt, libertarianism proves this point by not also pushing Christian based laws onto everyone. When they say limited goverment and freedom of the people to choose, they really mean it. So if you choose to be a muslim, go get an abortion with your own money, smoke pot, marry your gay partner, whatever, you should be free to choose what you do with your life and not have BIG GUBMIT tell you what to do with your life.

I dare you to find a poll to back up that statement. Less than 20% identified themselves as far left in the latest poll. 2010 elections also told a different story. < 50% approval for Obama also tells a different story. Try expanding your horizons beyond liberal talking points.
And as for what "center" is, by definition that would be people who back the laws of the land written by both parties. IE: The Constitution. Far left and right are those who want to change (or ignore) the Constitution to fit their beliefs.

Also, I think that many people have forgotten that the Tea Party and Republicans have said that they are determined to make OUR (America's) president a "one-term president" and they are doing everything they can to try and make it happen. I hope that the American people will read...ask questions...and not allow fear and scare tactics influence them at the polls in 2012.

Planned Parenthood is a hugely important service for WOMEN and Democrats should not give in. Repubs should not get to pick what they want cut. Pathetic. Repubs are only out to protect the wealthy. Remember that all the people that didn't care enough to get out and vote for Dems last election.
Maybe if parents taught their children a little more responsibility, we wouldn't need a federal funded by taxpayers--"Planned Parenthood". I don't mind the program, I mind the fact that federal tax dollars support it, instead of the charities that the rich are supposedly donating to.
But then again I will agree, all programs need to be cut, not pick and choose. That much I agree with. All should be on the chopping block.
Planned Parenthood does a huge service to both women and men. They are not just a abortion machine; they do offer this service but all of the other services they offer outweigh that one service by a lot. We're talking Breast Cancer Awareness, Women's Annual Exams, Sex Education, all ranges of Birth Control, Pregnancy Assistance, STD Treatments and Awareness, Men's Health to name a few. Lets not forget that all the services are for people that cannot afford to see normal doctors for these services because they cannot afford it. Remember, a doctors visit alone can top $200 if not more plus medication! They base what you pay on what you make and insurance. My wife had to go there many times when the job situation was ugly and money was tight. I say cut something else; this service does too many great things to be cut.
Annie, they offer cancer screenings, yearly wellwoman exams, STD screening and treatments, family planning services, vasectomies/tubal ligations, etc. For a "pro-choicer" you sure are ill-informed.
Why do we need Planned Parenthood? Has anyone ever heard of going to your family doctor for breast exams, annual pap smears, cancer screenings, STD screening and treatments, and all the other assortment of services they offer? Why should our federal tax money go to support this? I am a pro-lifer, but I still do not understand why tax dollars should go to pay for someone to have an abortion or for their birth control. If you are not ready to be a parent don't have sex, if you are too cheap to buy a condom don't have sex. It's simple. If you get raped go see your family doctor or go to an emergency room!

Most of those with reproduction problems can't afford to go to a doctor. They can't afford screenings and pregnancy prevention. They can go to the emergency room for treatment of basic stuff but that is about it.

I am part of the working middle class (very close the the poverty line) I watch every penny that I spend and do not have many of the "toys" others have. I live within my means and scrimp and save to afford the few toys that I have. I have a daughter that I support within my means. I work for my health insurance (oh by the way I also have MS and have all the costs that go along with that). Before I had my daughter I used birth control, to prevent an unwanted pregnancy, through a family doctor not planned parenthood. Although if I couldn't afford the birth control, I would have used restraint and not had sex! After I got pregnant, again not a planned pregnancy (my husband was not working at the time), but we made due, again through a family doctor and an obstetrician.
My views are not CLASS WARFARE, but they are my views. I feel if you cannot afford something you just don't do it. It is called restraint. Why should we pay for something when simple self control would prevent it? Why does everyone feel they are entitled to something just because it feels good.

I didn't have a boyfriend until 12th grade and abstaned till later, .I am now 39 and have only had 6 partners in my lifetime...I wasn't getting pregenant until I was ready also these boyfriends used protection too.

I agree it is a big country. I just believe in taking care of myself. I don't like to have to rely on anyone to take care of me. I could have received welfare and food-stamps and probably medicaid when I divorced my husband, but I worked and took care of myself and daughter on my own. Welfare and Medicaid are there for a temporary assistance, but not something we should all live on. We should not live off of our government. They are there to temporarilly help us not as a way of life.
Really Big Bear, I am a tax payer too. I want some tangible benefits and services for my tax dollar. I do not want to pay taxes simply to see the money given to the rich. Or funneled into programs, that do not benefit the middle class and the poor.

You’re forgetting the fact that millions of us, people like me, are paying INTO Social Security, we’re not taking anything out.
President Clinton make Social Security solvent, and maintained a Social Security surplus for 40 years into the future.
Bush took office and took all of our money OUT of Social Security and that money has to be repaid because it is NOT government money, it’s money that belongs to the people.

The reason people fled Europe and discovered this country in the first place was for freedom of religion. I have a clue. I do have a moral high ground. I have never smoked, done drugs, and rarely have more than one drink on the extemely rare occasions that I do drink. So looking back over history the moral decay of our country started around the late 60's early 70's and has only proceeded to worsen in recent years. We pay less attention to our children and what they are doing. Drug use has worsened and the crimes have worsened. I would have to say unfortunately I was a child born from those days, but my parents raised me to be the Tea Party Republican I am today. Can you say the same?
Don't get me wrong I do feel for the disabled, children who lost their fathers, & mentally handicapped, etc. but how long should we support them? Is it really the countries job to support them indefinitely? Should we support them for their entire lives and why? These are tough questions. We, as a country, only have so much money to go around. We can not keep borrowing forever. We have some tough decisions and they will involve some very tough answers and not everyone is going to like the answers. But we are all going to take a hit in one way or another.

Congresses reply was a bill that put requirements on the Senat that they knew wouldn't pass, just like they put requirements on the continuing resolution. By the way the military will get paid only delayed. The workers that are furlowed will only get paid if congress votes for it.

The repubs refused to raise the debt limit for the budget. The dems didn't want to cut anything, they just wanted to continue spending so the CR's were passed as a temporary way of avoiding the tough choices. The budget could have and should have been dealt with by the democrats. They brought this crisis on and we all should blame them for using bad judgement and not having the backbone to address the budget earlier. We can blame the republicans for trying to take advantage of this crisis by adding the riders to the budget. I haven't heard of any alternate plan by the democrats to cut the same dollar amounts out in a different way. They still don't want to stop spending and the republicans want to make all the cuts on the people that can least afford them. I would say they both parties are screwing over the American public on this issue.

As long as the military and air traffic control gets paid (I have no vested interest in either), I couldn't care less if this worthless government shuts down. You’re kidding, right? The Tea Baggers INSIST on shutting down the government because if they can make America fail, that’s a “win” for the Tea Baggers and Republicans.
Have Republicans AGAIN closed their eyes and ears to their chanting voters who are calling for “NO COMPROMISE”? No matter WHAT the Democrats say, Tea Bagging Republicans will say the exact opposite and then deny they’re flip-flopping because they say they are united in their opposition.
All over the Internet Tea Baggers and Republicans are calling for shutting down the government with chants of “That’s what we sent them to Washington for!” and you STILL can’t take credit for your own orchestrated work?
Lie in the face of truth if you like, because the rest of America is NOT deaf, dumb or blind.

What the Tea Party wants is a government that works to support the people as they work and make their lives better. Not to support the people!! We have become a society of entitlement, and the funds are coming from the ones who work hard to make this country a better place for their families!! We are tired of the taking - tired of the foolish spending! We want our hard earned money to go to more practical spending! I don't know what you call it - I don't care.

How do you reconcile this with the fact that some government programs actually do help to make peoples' lives better and/or push them to do so?

I fail to see how paying into a system for Social Security and Medicare for 30 years and not feeling entitled to your fair share is a bad thing.

Obama was on Spring Break in Brazil instead of working with Congress on a budget... remember this is LAST years budget.

Oh, and he's going to war for oil in Libya, but now the troops won't be paid because Obama was too busy to work out a budget. He can try to blame Conservatives, but Americans are too smart for that. We know he is to blame.

This is the current fiscal year budget (2011) which started on October 1, 2010. You cannot vote on the 2010 budget as that fiscal year is over and done with.

It will be entertaining to see all 545 voted out just to be replaced by another 545 dumb asses. Lets face it, more than 50% of that 300 million are complete idiots. How do you think we ended up with the 545 that are in office today?
